3rd Trimester

Ice cream and glucose test

I ate ice cream the night before my 1hour glucose test. I failed with 159 and now need to take the 3 hour. Can the ice cream really impact my test results? I used to have a sweet tooth before I got pregnant but during this pregnancy I haven't been craving any sweets so I'm surprised that I failed.

Unless you ate a pint or more loaded with candy in the middle of the night before a 7am test (or something else extreme), it shouldn't throw the test by very much if at all. They will normally have you fast 8hrs ahead of the 3hr challenge so they have an accurate baseline for the first draw. Just make sure you check with your OB so you know how they handle things.

It's entirely possible to pass the 3hr challenge even with an elevated 1hr test result. You can have GD even if you normally eat healthy, low sugar/carb food. There is no way to prevent it since it is caused by the placental hormones interfering with glucose and insulin.

ETA oops, DD punched post before I was ready :) Just wanted to say good luck with the test.

I bombed the 1-hour with a 178 and passed all 4 draws from the 3-hour with flying colors.

It happens, don't sweat it.  Even if you do fail the 3-hour and end up with a GD diagnosis it's really not that big of a deal.

Lol that's actually what happened. I ate a half pint of Ben & Jerry's everything but the kitchen sink ice cream. It was decadent and loaded with mire sugar than the avg. I don't usually eat that but I had a craving and sent dh for it then remembered I had my glucose test in the morning. I ate it at 8pm and my test was at 7am. I'm just mad at myself bc I have been eating pretty healthy the whole pregnancy and still failed.

Well, given you had almost 12hrs between splurge and test, I highly doubt it had any effect on the results. If you'd eaten it at say, 3am then gone straight to bed then yes, it might have a slight effect. Even when I was diagnosed GD my fasting sugar after a bedtime ice cream splurge was always under 80.

Like I said before, eating healthy has pretty much no bearing on whether you get GD or not. Don't be mad at yourself. You could eat perfectly every day and still get it.

  • Like PPs said - you can bomb the first test and past the three hour. A lot of pregnant ladies fail the one hour.

I failed it too and passed the three hour one with flying colors.

  • 12 hours is a long enough time that it shouldn't have affected it.

I ate like a rabbit my entire pregnancy with DD1, and still failed the tests and had GD. With this one, I've indulged more in cravings, and passed my one hour with flying colors. I'm overweight, so I was more than prepared to fail it. What you eat doesn't affect it too much. It's more so how your placenta processes sugars. Good luck with your 3 hour!

    Edit: words. English is hard.

  • No. Period. There is nothing you can do to impact the test one way or another. It will be what it is. That being said though, a lot of women go on to pass the 3hr like PPs have said.

  • Nope. Your sugars would have been level (if not a little lower) after sleeping & 12 hours.
