Since about 6 weeks I've had this weird butt pain on and off. It's normally once every couple of days. It's almost like a pinched nerve feeling. I'd think it was non pregnancy related but it keeps happening and it started after I got pregnant. It's really uncomfortable to walk and lord help me if I sneeze.
Any idea what this is???

Re: Butt pain?

  • Sciatica? For me it's a shooting pain down my butt and thighs. I've had it since I got pregnant with my first. Stretching helps but I'm about to make a chiro appointment.

If it's sciatica, sleeping with a pillow in between your legs will help a ton.  I've had problems with my sciatic since I was pregnant with DD, and it's the only thing that seems to ease the pain.

It's like... The top of my butt. If that makes sense. I wonder if it isn't sciatica- i don't have it down to my thighs though- it like the top of my but or my verrrrry lower bsck

What would cause sciatica so Early? Everything I've read says third trimester :(
  • Sounds like sciatica! My PT says it's caused by all the joints and ligaments loosening to get ready for childbirth. ( I've had at since 5w) Good luck!

  • I've had sciatica pain since 10 weeks. Maybe if we get it early, we won't have it later. Well, a girl can dream.

Could be pain from your SIJ (super common as your ligaments relax) and/or sciatic pain.
Or your piriformis might be really tight - though this could be a result of your SIJ "loosening"

I would invest in an SIJ belt (I like the pubic symphysis belts best, they do the same job) and maybe check out some physical therapy?

If it is just your SIJ, wearing the belt properly during all weight bearing times would make it go away. Try squeezing your pelvis with your hand on either side right now while you take some steps and see if that feels any better (like you are pushing your pelvis together)

EDIT: just noticed you said it doesn't go past your butt - therefore not really classified as sciatic pain. Leaning towards SIJ here. Get on a belt!

  • I've also had increased sciatic pain for a few weeks. I had it before, and it has gotten quite a bit worse. Mine radiates down my butt. I made an appointment with a chiropractor tomorrow (first ever) so we'll see how that goes. I'd love to bend over or stand in certain positions (or sleep in any position) without pain.

  • It's sciatic nerve pain and will go awY on it's own. It may actually shoot from your butt to your ankle, unfortunately it's completely normal://

I also have SIJ pain right in my left butt cheak. it felt like a pinched nerve as I would walk or bend and it's because my pelvic bones have gotten out of alignment due to my relaxed ligiments inside. Doctor said this is very normal, but not everyone experiences the pain.

I have been going to physical therapy and learning excersizes to help which have been great. I also recieved an SIJ belt and have noticed it's helping a lot. Maybe just double check with your doctor and ask if they reccomend anything. :)
