Baby gift for rich friends that have everything...

DH's bff and his wife just had their first baby. They have loads of money and everything for the baby. They didn't even register and only had a little party (no gifts) for the shower. They also live about 5 hours from us. When I had DS they sent us a huge box of stuff off our registry. They probably spent $200 on DS. Anyway, now that their baby boy is here I want to send them something. They don't need anything, but I need ideas. I was thinking something personalized or something. Please help give me ideas. Maybe something around $50 or something. I don't know...

Re: Baby gift for rich friends that have everything...

  • what did they decorate the nursery as? get on etsy and see if you can find something specialized for their nursery, maybe with baby's name...I know they probably have it decked out already, but I'm sure it would be nice to have something more special and personalized! Also, do something with baby's picture. I'm not sure what, but what new mom doesn't want baby's picture on things lol!

  • I found personalized baby spoons on Etsy that made a great gift for a couple who had everything for baby. I also got other friends' of ours daughter a plate a bowl set with her name on them for her first birthday from Etsy. It is a gold mine for stuff like that.

Love the idea of a personalized spoon!  I've also always kind of coveted silver baby rattles (useless but cute), I bet you could find one on Etsy and have the baby's name and DOB engraved on it?

  • i think the way to go is either the extra special personalized product route (as pp's mentioned), or as practical as you can get, as in things that every parent needs a lot of - like diapers. who can complain about diapers? (unless you think that is a "boring" gift...which i guess is true)

Ooooh Tiffany used to make an engraved baby rattle but I think they discontinued it because people were actually giving it to their kids (not what it is intended for).  I'd check into that.  Otherwise I like the Etsy or artwork suggestion.

I agree a personalized gift. Maybe a gift for mom? The Vintage Pearl (online website) has great new mom jewelry. They also sell the personalized spoons.

This is for all the caterpillars that never became butterflies. And for all the butterflies that never felt the wind in their wings. And for all the hearts that had hopes and dreams of a wondrous flight together.
  • I'd probably do something like a personalized baby memory box or maybe a gift certificate for a photographer locally for them to get some newborn or family photos done.

  • More than likely a gift to them isn't going to be about how much you spent on the gift -- it is going to be about the thought behind the gift.  Don't over think it and don't try to compare $$ amounts.

I think some PP have given you some great ideas. Go with something personalized and from your heart. It will mean more to them that way than a generic gift that you spent a ton of money on.

For my DS's baby shower I asked for people get him a book and to write a message/their names in it.  Now when we read the books we tell him who got it for him and I think it's really special! I like the idea of a personlized spoon or dishes!  Very cute ideas :)

I found a great website minted.com with one of a kind art prints. Some of them are customizable with birth weight/time/date/name. That would be neat gift that is unique.

This site came to mind. I like the idea of teething jewelry and it's a pretty unique and functional gift idea.

  • This book has always been a hit for everyone I've gifted it to. It is about the child's name (personalized, of course).

Otherwise pottery barn kids has a lot of monogrammed options. I also think of a little giraffe blanket (or a comparable brand) as a "luxury" item. Our relative that is really wealthy always gifts little giraffe blankets. They are so soft!

We were given a personalized wooden stool with our daughter's name on it- great gift. The letters fit in like puzzle pieces. It's practical now that she's 3 and used it in the bathroom, fun, educational, and great because we don't often find her name on things.
  • Etsy has very cute growth charts.  I bought them for my kids and also my BFF"s kids.
  • One of my favorite gifts for daughter #5 when we didn't need anything was a big canvas bag with handles from PBKids that has my daughters' name on it. As a baby, we used it for all misc. baby stuff and now (she's 5) it's her toy bag. I just looked it up and the one we have is no longer available and some priced as low as $37.99. In any event, I'm with the PP, go the personalized approach. It's less about who spent what and more about you finding something you've put thought into as something perfect for them.
