Cloth Diapering

Intro and Cloth and Daycare Question

Newbie here! DD is almost 8 months and We've decided to start trying cloth diapers, mainly for the cost savings. DH will transfer at the end of year, and I'm planning to stay at home for the 3 years we are on that adventure. With the hope of adding another little one, I figured now is the time to start building a stash that will work now and in the future.

I'm going to start off with some BG 4.0 and some Flips. If things go well on weekends, I'd consider adding them in during the week while DD is at DC. DC is open to it, but doesn't do it for anyone yet. For those of you in a similar situation, what styles of diaper would you recommend for DC? What do you send in each day? How do they handle the dirties? TIA!

Re: Intro and Cloth and Daycare Question

  • It's going to depend on the laws and regs in your state for DC.  I would try looking it up or ask the daycare if there are any regs they have to follow.  My state is pretty unregulated when it comes to cloth.  I send Kawaii HD2 and a few other aplix dipes to make it easy on them.  On occasion a snap diaper has been included and they use it *usually* without problem.  He's goes through more clothes at daycare but I think it is because they just don't fasten tight enough.  I send one wetbag each day and they just leave it on/next to the changing table and keep it zipped in between uses.  I pull the diapers out at the end of the day and unstuff and fasten aplix to the wash tabs.  NBD.

We have had good luck sending aplix pockets to DC. When he was in the infant room and had one teacher all the time I could send just about anything and that teacher did a great job. When he moved up they started having more leak issues, so I went back to the most like sposies possible.

Our DC uses our wetbag for dirties. Youll want to ask what yours wants/needs. One DC we interviewed wanted a can with lid and liner. I've heard of some DCs sending each dirty indiv. wrapped in a plastic bag.

  • We haven't actually started yet, but have discussed with our chosen daycare. They will use any kind of CD's but prefer AIO's or pockets. We will take a stash, and replace however many are used each day. According to state regs, they cannot empty the poops into the toilet, so we'll have to handle that at home.

Also according to regs, they can either place the dirties in an individual plastic bag, or in a "hands-free plastic lined pail." We'll provide a pail liner for them to use and transport home every night.

    They will use disposable wipes.

Really?  That's weird because isn't everyone actually supposed to dump poop in the toilet, regardless of using sposies or CD?  EPA regulation or something.  I might be totally wrong and not know what I'm talking about, too.
I've never heard of this.  All of the state regulations vary so maybe that's why.

This page has links to all the regs so you can looks yours up:

  • This is all great info - thanks so much! We're at a church daycare, so I know some of their regs differ, too. Is it a pain to scrub old poo when you get home?

We send DD to DC with a clean wet bag containing fresh diapers and just bring the bag of dirties home. Right now DD is EBF and when she start solids we will also provide liners for DC. We are very lucky in that some other crunchy mamas paved the way and they have no issues with cloth diapers.

  • My baby is still EBF but with the diapers stored in the wetbag they don't dry out enough to become dry. I've seen other mama's say that by leaving the solids poo on the diaper allows it to soak up excess moisture throughout the day and makes it easier to plop at night when emptying the bag. If you end up spraying I would imagine that it would still be wet enough to spray off.

Our state requires a full change of all diaper components with each change-- so I will send AIOs and stuffed pockets- BG and Blueberry brands.  All of our diapers have snaps, but I would consider aplix if we had any or if they can't handle snaps for some reason.  I have 2 or 3 hanging Planetwise wetbags and the cleans will go to daycare in a tote bag, and the dirties come home each night in the wetbag.

we go to a home daycare so its a bit more flexible, but here's what we do:

send 4 AIOs or stuffed pockets (we only have snap dipes) in a wetbag. She takes them out of the bag in the am and puts them on DD's shelf. When she changes, she just puts the whole dipe into the wetbag, poop and all. We just deal w it at home. Then we take the whole bag home at the end of the day, and send a new one the next day. Works great!

In centres here, they too have the 'no poop disposal' rule. I don't get why, but whatever.
