Provera Dosage

Ok, I'm kinda freaking out right now.  My doctor started me on Provera to induce my period.  I read about Provera to start a cycle and Dr Google says that it is normally prescribed at 10mg.  The RE office called in the prescription so I don't know what they ordered, but the bottle says they are 100mg. Also there should only be 20 pills in the bottle, but it has 30 pills. I'm two days into taking these pills and today I noticed that my hair is falling out. Can anyone tell me if 100mg of Provera normal??

Is it specifically called Provera? I know there are a few drugs that do similar things and the dosing could be different on them??

I have taken 5mg or 10mg for 10 days. I've never heard of anyone taking 100mg for any reason. While there might be a good reason for it, I would definitely be double-checking with a doctor or pharmacy.

The label says Progesterone 100mg, generic for Prometrium 100mg. When I talked to the nurse, she specifically said she was going to call in a prescription for Provera. This is why I am confused.

Well, prometrium is a slightly different drug (that does the same thing as Provera) but the dosing could be totally different. I can see if I can find anything on normal doses....

If you think you're having a reaction, it still might be worth talking to your doctor, but if it's not drastic hair loss, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

From that site, it sounds like the pills come in 100mg tablets. You should check your bottle closely. Are you supposed to be taking more than 1 per day? That could explain the discrepancy in how many pills there are.

I just started provera last week. My doctor did say there were a few different dosages. I am only on 10 mg for 10 days right now to see if that works. The way she explained it to me was to try one dose first and wait a week and if I don't start she will put me on a higher dosage. I hope you get it figured out

Thank you so much for all of your help. I greatly appreciate everything. The bottle says to take 1 by mouth as directed. The nurse said take one pill twice a day. The label says there are only 20 in the bottle, but I couldn't remember if I took one this morning so I counted them.  There were 27 left in the bottle. Since the pharmacy screwed up the count, it kinda made me wonder if they messed up the meds too.

Hmm I take progesterone every cycle substituted for prometrium and mine is 200 MG twice a day! Mine are inserted vaginally... I don't know if that makes a difference. So I guess higher dosages do exist but I would still call in to explain any symptoms you are having!

If that happened to me, I would probably stop in the pharmacy with the pills and just make them double-check that they're the right ones. Sooo glad that TTTCers here were able to confirm your dosage - I got really nervous for you after reading the original thread! Hope AF comes nice and quick!!

When I was on prometrium I was prescribe 600mg daily. So the amount you're taking is not unheard of. But certainly if you're concerned about side effects or if you're even taking the right meds, call your doctor asap!

I'm currently taking 200mg of prometrium once a day for 10 days.
I'd say the dosage seems normal, but would inquire with your pharmacy on the quantity.
Also when in doubt contact your doctor for further instructions for piece of mind.

I've taken prometrium before or the generic and it was 100mg pills that I took by mouth but I think the same med can be inserted vaginally. I think it's a different drug than provera but does the same thing.
