Placenta Previa ?

I haven't seen a discussion on this for a while.  Are there any ladies that still have a form of PP?  I knew I had a low lying placenta at my 20 week u/s,  but based on dr feedback that it was highly likely to move I wasn't very concerned.  I have continued normally and had no bleeding to date.

I went in for a 32 week u/s on Fri and was told that the placenta was 9mm away from my os.  I have yet to talk to my OB about the results (their offices are closed on Fri PM).  I don't want to be alarmist, but I have to admit I was thrown by the news, even though it is not a complete PP.  Right now I am reconciling myself to a potential CS and trying to figure out what the dr is going to say - based entirely on my Google University medical degree, of course.

My plan is to call OB's office on Monday to get some direction.  I don't think that is an overreaction.  I think it is a prudent decision - just in case there is a comms break-down between u/s office and OB office.  I also have cancelled all my workouts (such as they were) until I talk to my OB.

Anyone else still dealing with PP?

Re: Placenta Previa ?

  • Complete at 20 weeks, moved slightly at 24, but waiting intil my 32 week appointment on the 19th to hear what's happening now...so waiting to see what to expect till then!

  • I had complete placenta previa at 22 weeks.  I didn't have any complications with bleeding or anything and at 28 weeks the ultrasound showed it moved completely out of the way.  The doctor is going to check it again 36 weeks but feels pretty confident that we won't have to have the baby early or have a c-section.

    Best of luck to you!

  • Diagnosed at 20w and it was still in place at 25w. Doctors still seem confident it will move. Going back Friday to find out. I was told if it's still in place at 32w, they will schedule a c-section for 39w, but will keep checking for it to resolve.

  • I had partial at 18 weeks. Had moved slightly at 26 and cleared completely at 30 (2 weeks ago).
  • Mine moved at my 31 week ultra sound last week so hopefully you will get some good news too!!
  • First I had complete previa (I don't remember when that was diagnosed...maybe at 16 or 18 weeks?), then it started moving, but it split into a bilobed placenta, leaving exposed fetal vessels near the OS (nearly vasa previa, an extremely dangerous condition for the baby), now the bilobed mess has been pulled up and the fetal vessels are farther from the OS, but one of the placental lobes is still a marginal previa.  I will definitely be having a c section, and they are doing it at 36 weeks to ensure I never go into labor or break my water, which could still be very dangerous for the baby.  In fact, if my water breaks I have to go immediately to whatever is the nearest hospital for an emergency c section ASAP.  Kinda nerve wracking   :-S

Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly for you and LO stays in there until you are 36 weeks!

  • I had marginal previa at 18 week A/S... have usound scheduled at 30 weeks to check on it. Let us know what your doctor says!

Complete at 16 weeks, partial/marginal at 20 weeks and 10mm away at 28 weeks.  There are now no contraindications to having a vaginal birth.

  • thanks for all your comments ladies.  I got a chance to speak with my dr. and she has said:

    1.        Travel is out for me

    2.       No need for bedrest.  In her view it is easy enough to get to the hospital if something goes wrong (small island)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    3.       No more working out.  Can only do low impact walking for exercise

    4.       Will need another ultrasound in 2-3 weeks to check position of placenta

    5.       My placenta has a 30% chance of moving.  It needs to be 2cm away from the os for me to be able to try for a vaginal delivery

    6.       She did not mention pelvic rest

So a bit of management (where possible) and a lot of wait and see.

Thanks again for all your feedback.  Best of luck to everyone for a healthy and safe delivery.

  • I don't know if you still want feedback, but I'll share anyway. :)  PP at 20 wks, moved up to partial previa at 24 wks, downgraded to low-lying at 31 wks.  I'm cleared to try for labor/vaginal delivery as long as there's no bleeding.  I've been on pelvic rest since 24 wks, so over it!  And not related to your question, at my 31 wk u/s I was diagnosed with IUGR so basically traded one potential issue for another.  So far baby is doing great with the NSTs, though.
It's interesting your doc restricted your exercise but didn't put you on pelvic rest.  Anyway, hope your placenta moves a bit more so you can try vaginal!  Update us when you get your next u/s!
