Cloth Diapering

Prefold/flat newbie

The majority of my stash is pockets and AIOs with a few fitteds/covers for ON. Every time we go on vacation, we end up using sposies since pockets take up so much room and they leak/blow outs EVERY TIME. This summer I really want to CD on vacation, so I'm guessing prefolds or flats with covers.

I currently have 4 Capri size 2 and 3 size 1 covers. Is this enough for a 2 month and 21 month old? What kind of prefolds/flats should I get for these covers? I feel completely overwhelmed with the options. Also, I have a bunch of CBIs and heard some people use them in covers instead of prefolds? Can you really just use an insert in a cover and have enough absorbency? Please help! :)

Re: Prefold/flat newbie

  • Using an insert would likely give you enough absorbency, the problem is poop. Especially with the baby. If you use inserts poop will get on huge cover every time, which would mean you don't have nearly enough covers!

If you use prefolds or fitteds with a snappi you have a bare minimum number of covers. You might find yourself hand washing in the sink and hanging to dry in between washes.

I would get at least two more each but that's just me. Green mountain diaper prefolds and fitteds are very popular.

  • Just kidding for some reason I thought you said you had two size two covers. I think you're good there but need a few more for the baby.

  • Just throwing it out there but flour sack towels from Walmart would be a cheap solution if you're only going to use them for vacation. They work great on my 4 month old. You'll have to ask sometime else about how they would work on a two year old.

  • You could buy a couple new covers and some FST from walmart for almost what you would pay for the two different size packs of sposies you would have to buy for two LOs, so it would be totally worth it.

And honestly, you probably have enough covers because you could easily hand wash and dry them each night in the sink if you had to. Hand washing a cover is no big deal, much easier than washing a whole diaper. But I would get at least a couple for the baby just to be safe.

Great quality prefolds for the best price is the no brand Indian cotton prefolds, I get mine from Nicki's.

A lot of this depends on how long you will be gone, and if you will have laundry access.

  • As the flats and handwashing challenge is proving, to me anyway, flats and covers can be handwashed pretty much any where so taking them in vacation should be nbd and as a bonus will fit both of your LOs and they don't take up that much space. A pack of sposies might actually take up more space. BUT be forewarned, once you learn how to use flats, you might not want to go back to AIOs. I never thought I would ever say this.......I'm having too much fun with my flats. If given the choice, I'd take the flats over the prefolds for the vacation simply because you couldn't use the baby's prefolds on your toddler if you run out and prefolds are bulkier than flats.

  • Flats dry faster than prefolds too which is a nice benefit generally, but especially if you are traveling somewhere humid or drying them indoors.
