Skin condition - thoughts?

DS1 has had this for quite some time. It goes very pale to very red.
Doc said they didn't believe it was psoriasis or eczema. He had a yeast rash on his bum and they thought this might also be yeast, but the cream didn't help.

Has anyone else had to deal with a similar condition? (I hesitate to call it a rash). It's primarily behind his knees, but he has a few spots elsewhere on his legs.

XPd on a couple other boards.

Re: Skin condition - thoughts?

  • Have you tried cortisone or another steroid cream? I have no clue what it is but i might try that. Does it bothers our DS?

  • If it's a yeast condition, coconut oil should clear it up. Other than that, no clue. Sorry.

  • DS gets something similar when it's hot. But his is eczema. We use Cortizone and it usually clears up.

    Contact dermatitis would seem weird as its basically only behind his knees. (Tiny spots elsewhere)
    Doesn't look like (or act like) any heat rash I've ever seen. As for friction...he's had this for over 6 months.

    @Hollylb3‌
    We tried coconut oil too,...no help.

    @JMC11511‌
    We had a cortisone cream that didn't help either.

    It doesn't seem to bother him.
    It might get itchy a bit sometimes lately, but generally he doesn't touch it.

    It's just started to warm up here, so he will start wearing shorts in a few weeks or so. Maybe the exposure will help it heal? :-/
  • I get eczema behind my knees and elbows. I have since I was a kid too and it always flares up in spring and when the weather is very hot, sticky. I used hydrocortisone and it helped a lot.
  • I have skin allergies and when I react to things I get a rash like that behind my knees and under my arms regardless of where the allergen touched. Did he start using a new lotion or sunscreen or anything?

  • Z has a little spot behind her knee that flares up in the heat. We put tea tree oil or coconut oil on it and it helps.

    He's had this for over 6 months, during the fall, winter and into spring.
    He rarely seems to be sweaty there.

    @JeffandLeslie‌
    No new lotions, soaps, diapers or wipes. And no sunscreen. First time it was nice enough to go out without a jacket was yesterday.

    @hls19‌
    We've tried coconut oil to no avail.
    Maybe tea tree oil is worth a shot.

    --- I'm stumped. At this point I'm hoping for a referral to a dermatologist.

    Thanks for ideas and suggestions folks.
  • try tea tree oil- it's an antifungal. could help. hope it clears up!
  • Is it your oldest? This might sound weird but did he start using deodorant recently? I am allergic to antiperspirants and I was about that age when I discovered it. That's when I had the under arm and behind the knees breakouts.

    No, this is my 1.5 year old DS1.
    And I can't think of anything that was introduced around the time it started.

    He's been eating solid food since 6 months.
    Wearing the same brand diapers, using same brand wipes.
    Same laundry detergent.
    Grrrrrrr.
  • Oh never mind then. That's really frustrating, I would definitely be seeing a derm. The only other thing I can think of is to try eliminating stuff. My skin allergies have actually gotten worse with age and my derm told me that reactions will get worse with each application of the allergen. So my first reactions weren't terrible but now if I use a trigger ingredient the hives are really bad. Maybe he is developing an allergy? Hope you get answers soon!
