I loved prefolds. They take a little getting used to, but i liked the fact that you can grab them out of the dryer and put them right on the butt. Nothing to stuff or fold.

  • We used prefolds and covers. We went they route because we were looking to spend as little as possible, we knew wanted something that would last through many kids, and my research told me that prefolds were a good option for nb because they contain runny nb poop well and are easy to clean.

I wanted to commit to prefolds because of the lower cost, but I bought a few pockets in case DH or I wanted something easier. I ended up preferring the prefolds by far. We have never had a single problem in prefolds.

That being said, if I were to start over, I would probably try flats instead.

  • I have twins. We used prefolds and covers exclusively for the newborn stage because they were the most affordable and work the best for the liquid newborn poops. While you can get newborn pockets or all in ones, the timespan to use them is quite limited and they are more expensive. I decided to wait for one size diapers to try out pockets and all in ones. Turns out I thought I'd like pockets the best and I really like all in two systems (which I use with both prefolds and inserts).

If you have a bigger budget, I'd still do prefolds and covers, but I'd add some workhorses. Then experiment with different systems in OS diapers when you get more use for the money.

We can still use our newborn covers (thirsties duo wraps size 1) at 6 months with the next size up in prefolds, so they've been an excellent investment (6 months of diapering twins for 250ish dollars). I've kept a spreadsheet of our expenses and while I've now spent more adding OS diapers, we're still saving significant money.

I used OS pockets and a few mini pockets on my twins. If I could do it over again, I would have used prefolds and covers and maybe a few fitteds.

I thought I was only going to use aios. That was back in January when I started reading this board. Now I have a stash of 24 nb prefolds, a few work horses and I just bought some ai2s because they were on sale. I never even got aios! Pre folds seemed a lot less scary once I started reading everyone's recommendations and comments! They are also much cheaper and dry so much faster!!!
  • I've been using so many more prefolds this time and I like it so much better. I really missed out the first time!

How many prefolds and covers did you order for the twins?

How many prefolds and covers did you order for the twins?

I had 8 total covers and 48 newborn prefolds. This was sometimes cutting it close for every other day washing but it wasn't a huge deal to me if I occasionally did diaper laundry every day. Another dozen prefolds could have been useful, but weren't strictly necessary. After reading the recommendations on this board, I had intended to order more covers in some different brands, but found I didn't need any more and liked the thirsties covers, so it worked out.

It's easy enough to order more once they are here, if you need more.

If you decide to stick with prefolds, once they stop pooping so frequently, i have found 48 total changes to be plenty for every other day washing. I have 3 dozen osocozy infant 4x8x4 prefolds, which fit up to 15 lbs, along with some best bottom inserts. I also have 2 dozen of the osocozy premium (15-30 lb) prefolds (half are bamboo), but those are way too big for them yet. I'll do the other 2 dozen changes with inserts.
