Insurance Question

Okay, so I don't know anything about insurance and having a baby since I've never done it before. We don't want to insure the baby through my insurance because it would cost a ton. We were planning on insuring the baby through my wife's insurance, but she just got her new job offer today and her insurance doesn't start for 90 days. So, we are thinking the best plan is to insure the baby through the healthcare exchange. Does anyone know anything about how to do this? It seems like you have to wait until the baby is born to apply. Then there is the whole issue of whether or not they recognize us as married or not. Argh.

We'd like to know what insurance the baby will have so that we can pick a pediatrician. Am I overthinking and over complicating this? Is there some secret knowledge out there that I didn't get about insuring a newborn?

Thanks, baby Bubbles appreciates all your amazing knowledge and experience

Re: Insurance Question

  • I don't have any amazing knowledge but I would call an insurance agent. They will likely know the answer. I would NOT call the healthcare exchange...they are very confused. It has been my experience that insurance agents seem to have the most insight to this new system. Good Luck!

  • If your baby is due in July, and your wife's insurance is 90 days from her start date, which would be mid- to late August-ish, right? - I would pay the money to just put baby on your insurance for that gap period of a couple months' time. I'd get the info on your wife's plan asap and chose a doc that was approved for both, then when you switched to hers you've got that continuity. It's such a short gap I'd not want to mess with the healthcare exchange bit.
However, if you do go that route, agreed with @firstcomeslove2013‌ to call an agent or a broker. J uses a non profit broker here in WA for the insurance she provides her shop managers and they basically listed to your situation and needs and recommend plans. I'm sure there is someone like that in UT. Good luck with it all.

  • Thank you both for the insight and suggestions. I'm feeling less anxious about it now and think we have a plan moving forward.
