Babies on the Brain

Questions to ask the dr.

My hubby and I are ready to begin ttc.  I have my annual gyno appt. next month and I'm trying to create a list of questions to ask.  I am 27 and have been on birth control for almost 10 years now.  My appt is in mid-June so I'm planning on finishing out my prescription at the end of June.  I recently had shingles on my face...a very minor case but was taking anti-viral medication for this.  That is obviously a concern for me and one that I want to discuss with my dr.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what types of questions I should ask my dr. as we begin trying?  Thanks in advance :)

Re: Questions to ask the dr.

  • I think I asked about prenatals.  That was about it.

I also asked for advice on TTC- the doctor referred me to TCOYF.  LOL

I took a picture of my PNV nutrition label and showed it to her. She said she wants me to have a little more folic acid once I become pregnant, so I should come back to get an Rx when that happens. I also told her that I planned on charting. I asked her if there was anything else I should be doing, and she said it looked like I was off to a great start, and to give her a call when I'm pregnant.
  • I had my "I'm about to start TTC" appt with my dr. a few months ago.  Her main concerns were to check my cholesterol, BP, and iron levels to make sure I was healthy.  I asked about prenatals and she said most reputable OTC ones would be fine for me.  I also asked about how long it could take (this was before I did my own research) and she said "anywhere from a couple days to a couple years" - so helpful.  But she did say to come back in if my period doesn't come back when I go off bcp (I've been on them 12 yrs now!) or if we don't have any luck after 6 months (because I was previously diagnosed with PCOS, I have a higher chance of needing meds, apparently).

    Good luck!

  • Thank you!  Those are all really helpful ideas.  My appt is in 1 month so I just want to make sure I'm prepared.  Going to the gyno always gets me anxious/nervous and I want to write all of my questions down so I can ask the questions I want.  When I get anxious/nervous I always draw a blank on what I wanted to ask in the first place :)
  • I had that same talk with my doctor a few months ago because I had a myoectomy a little over a year ago, so I just wanted to make sure I was good to go, so to speak. I just asked her if everything was ok and if there was anything I needed to be prepared. I was on bcp for roughly ten years, so I just asked her how that's going to affect me.I also asked how successful women are with conceiving after a myoectomy that left as much scar tissue as mine did. I also asked if my age was a factor since I am 32 (about to be 33 in a week). Otherwise, she said just not to worry after a year.
