Drinking while BFing

Up until now I haven't drank anything ... what do you ladies do?  Do I have to pump and dump? Can I have 1 drink without having to dump it?  Is there a certain amount of time I have to drink before pumping/nursing?

I don't plan on getting wasted We just have my family reunion and I'd like to have a beer or 2!

I have a drink while nursing. I've read it takes 30 min approx to get into my system so I start the drink at the beginning of the nursing session. I only have a beer or a little wine, nothing crazy. I've read to wait about 2 hours before feeding again so it's out of my system. He's on a 3 hour cycle so it works for me. I've heard pumping and dumping is uneccessary unless you are engorged while drinking a lot and can't breast feed the baby at that time.

I have also heard if you can drive, you can breastfeed but I found before that I wasn't a good measure of if I was buzzed or how much until I wasn't anymore, so I would rather follow that formula than my own feeling.

This is exactly what our Peditrician told me. Yes, LO's dr. She told me I needed to relax. Lol
I've had like 2 drinks since then, DH isn't sold on it, and doesn't think it's a good idea. I don't have the energy to argue with him.

Kellymom.com says alcohol metabolizes out of breastmilk the same as it does in your blood. So the same rules apply. You don't need to pump and dump, because it's only in the milk for as long as it takes to metabolize out... Then it's gone.

I plan on having my first drink in about a year tomorrow night! We're going to an event, so I'm totally going to have a glass of two of wine or champagne. By the time we get back to DD, it'll be well out of my system.

Ditto @sassyflats.  No need to pump and dump unless you're drinking continually and are missing a feeding while you still have alcohol in your system.

This! The times I've had a glass of wine, I've felt completely safe following these guidelines.

I have a drink (usually a glass of wine but sometimes a cocktail) 5/7 evenings a week and don't worry about it at all. I nurse my one drink over about 4 hours so I never feel any effect. I'm comfortable feeding LO anywhere in that time period. I never have more than one. I'm kind of an alcohol snob and I buy top-shelf stuff so I would never chug it anyway! ;-)

Hmm. If I didn't drink in the evening while breastfeeding, I'd have to drink at 11am, because that's the least likely time LO would be attached to my boob.

I have a drink on more than one occasion. I try to drink right after I nurse or while I'm nursing and limit myself to two of whatever. I get the side eye when i nurse and drink in restaurants... I'm just waiting for my call from children's services.

@akflutterby‌ there was a mom that was arrested and went to jail for doing this! It was in Arkansas! I think it was ridiculous! The baby was in no harm; I bet being away from his mommy was way worse than her having a couple of drinks!

This. I usually feed LO at 8 or 9, drink 2-3 glasses of wine afterwards, then by the time she wakes up for the first MOTN feeding, I feel completely sober. Sober= alcohol has metabolized.
