I have no idea what your boys' names are, but I think there's a big difference between a top 10 name that is classic, like Michael, John or James vs. a newly trendy name like Liam.
I was number 2 the year I was born and I hated being Amanda B. Every class ever. So thats why it matters to me... but seriously, it wouldnt be a popular name if it wasnt a good name, so there is that!

I agree! We like the more traditional names overall so the chances of us not picking at least a top 20 name were slim to none.
Our girl name is in the top 2. I couldn't care less. Our boy name is in the top 200.
DD's name is in the top 30, but her NN (that she goes by 95% of the time) isn't even in the top 500!
I think these things are interesting, but not something we base our decisions off of. I mean I'm a Sarah married to a Christopher and neither of us are traumatized by our popular names.
Darn, mine is in the top 10- Alexander...but I care not. It was my best friend's name growing up, and DH vetoed the other less common family name- Reeve.
I had a very popular name and no one else did...I was kind of sad that attention was brought to the multiple Jessicas and Jennifers, and always wished someone else shared my name. IT bothers me more now to repeatedly spell out my married name (and pronounce it). Before both my names were obvious on spelling and pronounciation.
DS's name is not in the top 1000(his legal name is the nickname of a top 200 name), but future DD is in the top 100 this year for the first time. I find this stuff fascinating.
I have a very common first name, but my maiden name initial was "P." and growing up, I think I was more annoyed by the "P" (pee) than sharing a name with so many people. If your last name doesn't start with P, I see no reason not to choose a name you love just because it's popular. ;-) Honestly I was happy to have a common, normal name rather than a crazy yooneek name.
Meh, Liam is a traditional name in my Irish family. And there aren't too many Liams running around in Hawaii, so I'm not worried about it! I'm fine with giving my son a name that is meaningful in our family even if it's trendy.

I didn't change my name when I got married, so I am still Jen P, and I totally agree that I hate having "pee" as part of my name sucked. . However, it didn't suck enough where I would be deterred from naming my kid the name I truly loved.
DD1 has a popular name (Amelia) but I've never met anyone in real life who has this name. Same with what we will name this baby. (Olivia) I think where we live they aren't as popular. I was looking at a chart of the US that had the names popularity by state and CA was pretty low, so I feel better that she (hopefully) won't be one of 8 in her class.
We decided on naming baby boy John Liam and calling him by Liam since John is his daddy's name and I didn't want little john and big john or a junior running around...still love Liam despite the name being popular- you learn to deal as I am a Jennifer Lynn and know several others with my same first and middle names.

My maiden and married last names are "P" names, so now I'm PP

I love your name choices! Our name choice is also popular elsewhere but not here in California. Caroline is #16 in South Carolina (where DH went to college, and the reason behind his love of the name... he is borderline obsessed with Charleston, SC), but doesn't even break the top 100 here.
We have a very long, and problematic (pronunciation/spelling) last name. Because of this, I prefer to give my children unique yet normal names that are ideally ranked 200 or below.
I love the fact that my name has never once cracked the Top 1000 yet isn't bizarre or anything.

As an Ashley born in 1986... I survived!
