Eccentric umbilical cord insertion

I have to get another ultrasound on Monday because my doctor said i have something called eccentric umbilical cord insertion. She said it was nothing to worry about they just want to keep an eye on it. Well I've tried looking into it and i haven't seen much info. I was just wondering if anyone else had the same thing. If so, did everything turn out ok?

Re: Eccentric umbilical cord insertion

  • It just means that the umbilical cord is not attached to the centre of the placenta and is attached somewhere 'off centre' (hence the term 'eccentric' insertion). This means you will have frequent monitoring as a precaution. Problems, if any, may occur depending on where exactly the cord is attached, but this all depends on your exact case, so my advice would be not to worry too much till your next appointment with the doctor and do ask your health care provider questions during your next visit! Stay positive!

  • I was also diagnosed with marginal (off center) cord insertion at 20 weeks. I have now had two growth ultrasounds, and will continue to be monitored for growth but the Dr. is not overly concerned. After the last one I don't go back until 32 weeks. She said more often than not it makes no difference, but the extra monitoring is great for peace of mind. I hope your appointment goes well Monday- enjoy the extra peek at your LO.

  • I was just reading about this today because I have a velamentous cord insertion. I think they will just watch us more closely than normal. I hope everything goes well for you!
