Now that the weather is warmer...

It was finally warm in Chicago today! I realized quickly that LO gets fussy when she's too hot, and I don't know how to handle it. A couple questions for those of you who are used to a warmer climate...

1. Any ideas to keep the carseat cool? We took a walk today (it was about 80 degrees), and she seemed so warm in there. The stroller will be more breathable when she's a little bigger, but right now we have our Chicco key fit seat attached to the City Mini stroller.

2. What temp do you keep your house at? When do you turn on the AC? We live in a city condo, so I think it would be too loud with the windows open. Or am I being too protective? Should I just open the windows? It's currently 80 degrees in here, so I did turn the AC on to cool it down.

I need to figure out her wardrobe now, too. She has plenty of short sleeved onesies, but mostly pants. And with cloth diapers, I have to size up in bottoms because the diapers are so bulky! I might just have to go shopping with her tomorrow :)

Re: Now that the weather is warmer...

  • I'm in Chicago too! Yay for warm weather finally. I just have baby rock onesies. When we went for our jog today I just put water on her to cool her off. I worry too about overheating

  • @babylimas, I need to try that. I'm pretty sure our stroller lays flat and has proper straps. Maybe this weekend. She would be so much more comfortable!

We keep the a/c at 77 right now (we may have to raise it when it gets hotter so we aren't spending so much money, ugh).

  • With all my night sweats, my house starts at 73 and ends up about 69/70 during the night.
Its okay, mia is a furnace and sweats too.

  • Hi! I've been lurking since I found out I was pregnant in July. As a FTM, I don't feel that I have much to contribute. However, in AZ we have already had near 100 degree temps.

During the day, we keep the a/c at 80-78 degrees. The ceiling fans are always on. LO wears just a diaper at home or a onsie if we leave the house.

At night, we lower it to 76-74 dergees. DH is freaking out about our pending utility bill, but I feel bad for LO. Even though he sleeps in just his diaper and a&a swaddle, he feels super warm when I change his diaper for the MOTN feeding. I keep his arms out of the swaddle, so he isn't completely covered.

We have a britax b safe car seat. For our walks we use a sun and mosquito shade/net that britax makes. I would assume that other manufactures make them too. That really helps. One of the stores out here makes these tubes that hook to the cars a/c and can be places in the car seat. I don't have one, but would love to get one since he sweats a bit in his car seat, even with the a/c on high and the tinted windows.
  • We keep the AC at around 75.

I take LO for walks in the morning at around 8 or 830 before it gets hot. We have britax b agile and have noticed she gets warm pretty easily in her car seat so we are careful with when she is outside in it. Here in NC it is already around 90.

If its warm i would lay the stroller seat flat or only slightly incline and skip the car seat. I haven't had to do this yet with DS since it hasn't been warm yet but that is what I did with dd who was born late June.

We keep our house at 69/70. I HATE being hot...or really even warm. Before kids we kept it at that temp plus I had a window unit for our bedroom so it was 62. Poor dh was freezing! I think my internal temp gauge is broken!

As far as opening windows, I think the more noise they get used to sleeping through, the better. When either of my kids sleeps we don't 'keep it down' at all.
  • 1.) We don't own a stroller. I wear him for walks, which is also warm but I make sure he's legs out/arms out and so far we've been fine (but this is VT!)

2.) We also don't have AC, so yup, just opening windows over here......again, VT!

  • Ok, I'm excited to try to ditch the carseat and just use the stroller. I think Elise might be happier, too... she's not a huge fan of her carseat. And the stroller has a much bigger shade than the carseat, which will help keep her out of the sun. Of course, today it's rainy, so I don't really have to worry about that  :-q
  • We also have a City Mini stroller. Once she hit 10ish lbs, she seemed comfortable just in the stroller, with the seat reclined nearly flat.
  • We live in manhattan and have the windows open all the time lately. I think it's best not to coddle and just let them get used to noise... Especially with living in a big city.
  • We live in the south, where temps are regularly reaching mid- to upper- 80s.

I don't put her in the carseat unless we're going in the car. For walks, I wear her in a linen sling. The Moby was way too hot. I would also consider laying the stroller flat if it's too hot to wear her at all.

Our a/c is set on 72-74. My grandparents tried to tell me it's too cold for a newborn, but most days she stays in cotton footie pjs all day. Sometimes, if it feels warm to me, I just put her in a onesie. No pants. That's what she wears if we go out, too. I have a couple of one-piece sleeveless summer outfits as well. I normally wear her once we get whatever we're going, so most people don't realize I have a pantsless baby anyway. :P

  • Oh, and if I don't wear her, I drape a light blanket over her legs in the carseat if we're going to be indoors. Still no pants. I don't even want to wear pants in this sauna!
