Would you be comfortable with this? Flying at close to 29 weeks

So my husband's aunt is getting married over the Memorial Day weekend. We live in Southern California and are flying to Northern California (Eureka) with one stop in San Francisco, to attend the wedding which we're really excited about. I've talked to my OB's office, and she has no problem with her patients taking short flights up til about 32-33 weeks, and I'm having a normal pregnancy so she doesn't see any reason to not go. They'll be giving me a note for the airline at my appointment next week. The only thing that makes me feel weird is that I know from San Francisco to Eureka it'll probably be on one of those small dinky planes and I already have some mild flying anxiety. Is anyone else flying around this time and feeling comfortable with it?

Thanks in advance :)

I did when pregnant with DS and it was fine! I was mildly uncomfortable in the seat so I got up a lot but no swelling or anything.

Let me tell you what was 100 times worse than flying at 30 weeks - being in Houston in July.

If you're worried about swelling get compression socks. I have toeless ones from Amazon that I can wear flip flops with.

  • I live is Southern California too! And I'll be flying the same weekend from SoCal to Illinois for my BFF's wedding. My dr gave me the go ahead to fly too as long as I make sure to get up and walk around. It's about a 5 hour flight (I think) so I"m pretty sure I'll be ok.

I too have a little anxiety about flying, but my H is going with me and this time we're not flying with the kiddos, they'll be staying with my MIL, so maybe that'll help with my anxiety.

I'm going to take my headphones and put some soothing music, I like a lot of classical music, on my phone and take my Kindle so I'll just read and listen to music or rest as we'll be getting in a bit late.

Good luck and hope you have fun! :) Oh and I'll be 30 weeks when I fly.

  • I'm flying from SEA to OAK for a wedding in late July- I'll be at about 34 weeks then. My nurse-midwife is fine with it so long as the pregnancy continues to progress normally. She did say to stand every half hour or so, and I plan to note the location of the nearest hospital to the wedding, just in case!

I've never flown late(r) in pregnancy, only at 4 and 12 weeks. But I would be okay with it as long as the dr was. Try to get up and walk around the plane(s) as much as possible and keep super hydrated.

I would just know ahead of time where the nearest hospital will be, if heaven forbid, something happened while you were up north.

Plus.. Flying beats the alternative of driving.
@gonzol couldn't agree more. If we were to drive, it would take almost 10 hours and that's with NO traffic! I'm glad we are flying - I just think I need to buy some earplugs and do some deep breathing exercises when we get on the small plane from San Francisco to Eureka. Those are the kinds of planes that give me anxiety!

@Chicky0727 This is all great advice. I will bring my Kindle with a good book and definitely ear plugs. That's really what gets me about those small planes, how noisy and bumpy they are. If I have ear plugs and can read something restful/stay calm, I think that will help a lot. I hope you have a blast too!

  • I'll be flying for a business trip (DH's) in mid-July. I'd say go for it. If your doc is down, why not?
@funnibunni80 yup, she seems perfectly OK with it - it's just my own anxiety. My husband definitely thinks I"m weird about planes in general. I can't help it!! Especially those little ones - it's a twin-turboprop commuter airliner, perfectly safe, just loud and bumpy. I fly on those quite often from Portland-Seattle and I have my ways of calming myself. This is just the first time I'll be doing so while pregnant! *deep breaths*

  • Another SoCal girl (Silver Lake in LA) and another 3rd tri flier! We're going to New Orleans for DH's birthday/Memorial Day weekend, at which point I'll be 28 weeks. I feel good about it and my OB doesn't seem to mind.

I flew to Fresno a couple days ago on a tiny propeller plane and did not enjoy it one bit. The noise was the worst, so I'm glad PP have recommended earplugs -- such a good call. Otherwise I felt safe, even with some pretty serious turbulence here and there. Fortunately your SF to Eureka flight shouldn't be too long, and if you get to sit by the window it should be beautiful!

I will be flying front Nashville to Buffalo via Atlanta at 30wks, Dr. Has no issue with it and we fly fairly frequently (my relatives are in Niagara Falls Canada and all but Dh's parents are in ohio, and DH is an airline pilot so we try to use our stand by privileges every few months). With my first I flew home at 36 weeks and had no issues then either. THe small planes used to scare me until DH took me up in a little two sweater in college, now I actually like the little ones as well as the larger planes. JUSt bring something to occupy yourself and you should be fine, the flights don't sound too long.

I'll be flying from ATL to San Diego June 2 at 31 weeks (on a free vacation given as a work award).  Will see my midwife a few days before and be sure she's ok with it, but I'm not too worried.  They usually let you fly up to 36 weeks.  I'll definitely be walking the plane, though, and may try to get DH and I upgraded to first class.

Will your insurance cover you if you need medical attention? I was planning on flying back to PA for a wedding at 37 weeks but found out that if something happened my insurance wouldn't cover treatment because they consider anything that happens a month before your due date a foreseeable emergency.

I've never flown pregnant, but I have flown on a prop plane from Sacramento to Eureka, which is about the same distance. I have no plane phobias or claustrophobia, but it was the worst flight ever. The planes are tiny and there is no possible way you would be able to walk around. But it's a super short flight. Have you looked into driving from SF to Eureka? It's a pretty drive and won't be as quick, but I'm sure you would be much more comfortable and you could stop as necessary.
@hmctagg01 we thought about that, but my mother in law paid for the flights and we're all meeting up at the SFO airport to be on that flight to Eureka. I looked up our tickets and it's only an hour and a half, so I am just going to do my best to deal with it. It would be a wonderful drive, though!

I'm flying Phoenix to San Jose for Memorial Day at 27 weeks!  The planes for that flight aren't usually too bad, not those little prop planes or anything.  It's also a short flight, so I'm just going to make sure I walk around about halfway through.  I did make sure to get an aisle seat so I don't have to bug anyone if I need to get up and stretch.

make sure to walk around a lot though and do ankle rolls and things to keep your circulation going (probably not walking on the puddle-jumper, but the bigger plane)

I will be flying for the last time at 27 weeks. I fly pretty frequently and don't have flight anxiety, so I am not worried about it at all. I think I would only be concerned to fly in the last 6 weeks or so. It's highly unlikely that the baby will come before then.
