Infertility

Med Question

Can someone please help me understand my med order? I was reviewing the order, and I think they had me order twice as much as I needed? The PIO (30 days supply in case of bfp I suppose) and cetrotide seem to be in correct quantity, but they ordered 4 vials of 900 gonal f and 20 vials of 75 menopur? My protocol as of right now is 75 menopur and 150 gonal f for 9 days. I can understand having extra in case I stim longer, need to raise dosage, etc, but twice as much? I'm lucky that as of now I have fertility drug coverage, and I said it was ok to order a little more if they thought I might need it, because I'd just donate the extra, but this seems a little extreme?  I do have PCOS and my re said that its either feast or famish, so maybe she thinks I'll need a higher dosage?

Re: Med Question

  • I also have PCOS and I guess I was in the feast category according to your RE b/c I over responded to all the meds and didn't end up using nearly all of my follistim (gonal f).

Menopur comes in a kit. If i'm remembering correctly that kit is 10 vials. So if you end up needing over 10 days then you'll have 2 kits totaling 20 vials.

On the gonal f I think the RE is being conservative if you end up needing more. It's often cheaper for you get the larger vials since you are doing 150 per day, but 4 of the 900 does seem like a lot. I wonder if your RE isn't anticipating having to up your dosage from 150 to some other amount and they are ordering 4 to be conservative. I know ladies who have had to go in the 200s or 300s a day on the gonal f b/c they weren't responding well.

  • Thanks @Puzzlefuz ! I guess that makes sense, and it makes it so I dont have to worry about not having enough/ordering more. If I don't use them, I'll just donate to help some one that's OOP for meds.

  • My Re wasn't thinking I would need a lot to respond based on previous cycles but I ended up staying on 225 for gonal-f the entire time instead of just the first few days.  Also you would potentially need twice as many bottles of the menopur in case they feel like you need 150 instead of 75.  If you have the coverage now, take everything they will give you.  you never know if you will need it for another cycle and having a bunch of meds already saved DH and me around $3000 for this IVF.

  • That does seem like a lot of Menopur. I've always seen it in boxes of 5 (and my pharmacy opened the box and removed extras so I only got what was ordered for me). During my first cycle, they ordered way too much Menopur because they were originally going to have me do 300 IU per day, but finally decided on 150.

If it's not too late, I would call your nurse and double check. Personally, I would rather order less and just overnight more if I need it.

  • I was in the category of always needing more medicine. They ended up upping my gonal-f to 300 and menopur to 150 so one gonal-f pen only lasts me 3 days! I would say better have more than not enough! I literally had to order medicine every other day.
