Do You Drink Caffeine?

edited May 2014 in TTC after 35
Please share your take on caffeine. I plan on drinking decaf coffee if we conceive, but I waffle about whether or not I should give up my half-caf coffee right now.

I still have a diet coke periodically as I can't stand the taste of regular soda.  I don't like coffee so that is how I get my caffeine fix when I need it.  I will ditch DC completely when I get a BFP and switch to regular ginger ale.

  • My OB was fine with my drinking diet soda both while I was TTC and while I was pregnant, but I keep hearing that others are not.  Do you guys know why?  Going without Diet Coke is not an appealing proposition...

I have an occasional cup of coffee, usually starbucks type lattes for a treat since I only like coffee with lot of sugar and milk and flavorings.  I switched to half caf during my brief time KU but would have been under the recommendations even if I hadn't.

@Davie813‌ I believe it's due to the sugar substitutes. I've also been told to give up "light" drinks because they also do sugar substitutes (like V8 fruit juices, Arnold Palmer has a light version).
I drink green tea every morning mixed with Hibiscus tea. The back if the box on my hibiscus tea says not to drink if pregnant or nursing until consulting my doctor. I would be so lost without it. Doing research as to why, it says not a whole lot of research has been done on the effects of some herbs while pregnant. I will give up what I have to, but that will be more upsetting than not drinking alcohol!
  • I have cup of coffee and one soda mixed with water everyday. When I was pregnant I was told to keep drinking both because I have very low blood pressure and they said pregnancy I would pass out without it...lol

Thanks -  that is the best news I've heard all day! I have very low blood pressure too, so I hope I get the OK to keep drinking a daily cup a coffee. :)

I drink 2 cups of decaf every morning. I only let myself drink caffeinated coffee the day I get my period and maybe the next day. That's it. I used to drink 2 pots of coffee a day before I had my 9 year old. I never want to go through caffeine withdrawal again. So that's why I stick with decaf. Oh and I don't drink soda so no caffeine there either.

Edit: because I just can't type

Before TTC#1 I used to drink a pot of coffee throughout the day. I quit cold turkey and it was absolutely awful. I agree about the withdrawal. I was so angry at everyone and would fall asleep at my computer in the early afternoon.

  • coffee and caffeine really dry the body up.  i am really sensitive to caffeine, after eating an entire green & black 70% dark chocolate bar i am off the walls for hours.  i cut out all caffeine about 2 weeks ago (as well as alcohol. i'm getting serious ladies!!) and now just do herbal tea, and i have to say i feel really good.  i really love the taste of coffee but don't want decaf - first it tastes gross, and second i've heard horrors about how it's processed (bad chemicals, formadehyde?!). so i'm just doing nettles and ginger and pregnancy tea.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • I don't drink soda at all, and never have really, and I have no idea what the recommended caffeine intact a day is, but I imagine I drink more (around 17 cups of tea a day and maybe a couple of coffees), but I'm going to try and cut down in June for my July transfer.
  • I'm currently going through caffeine withdrawals. I used to drink two cups of coffee/day but also like @Radiantly am getting serious too. I also heard that decaf has too many chemicals in it.
I'm currently drinking my liver detox tea morning and night and only room temperature water.

  • I drink way too much caffeine. I drink iced tea and diet Dr. Pepper mostly.  I have cut down on my soda intake since Lent though! I was drinking at least 4 a day and I've cut back to 1 or 2.
