Sick 12wk old - call pedi?

I can't decide what to do. My older DD was sick this past week with a virus, running a fever over 103F so it was just a matter of time til the baby got it. We took my older daughter to the pedi and she said it is going around etc.  Checked her ears which were fine but her throat was red raw.

Abby has seemed a bit congested the last 2 days. Last night she started having a little dry cough and sneezing a lot as well.  She isn't running a temp. but she seems a bit wheezy (you can sort of feel it in her chest when holding her) but 2 mins later you can't hear or feel anything behind her breaths. All in all she is in good spirits and I normally wouldnt call for an appt. for this but the wheeze scares me and she is just so little yet.  Any advice if you experienced something similar? Im worried if i wait til Mon and it gets worse I'll kick myself...

  • If you're worried, you should call. In the meantime, "steaming" her in the bathroom can't hurt.
  • Agreed with PP.  Humidifier and a call to the pedi...

I hope they both feel better soon!

  • my DS2 was asick around 8 weeks old, along with DS1, with congestion & cough....i felt better bringing him to the pedi...b/c like you said they're still so little.  the pedi listened to his lungs & chest, said he was clear but to come back if he started running a fever or had labored breathing & not just like after he coughed but continuous labored breathing.  if it'll make you feel better go for it but if you wanted to wait to see if she starts feeling better & keep your eyes open for the fever/labored breathing i'd say its okay too.

all in all i'd probably at least call your pedi. & see what they say.  also mine suggested to make sure to be using the humidifier, elevate the head of the mattress, use saline to help him breathe & suction when necessary.

hope your girls feel better soon.

  • I'm usually the mom who holds off on running to the doctor because I really believe a little illness is good for toddlers--it strengthens their immune systems.  So I am by no means an alarmist or someone who calls the doctor at the drop of a hat.  But when your talking a baby that young, I would not hesitate to call the doctor.  Even if you have to have the doctor paged and wait for a call back.  Babies that young still don't regulate ther temps/fluids that well.  And a child with stronger lungs can battle a respitory infection that might really harm a younger baby.  They may want to keep your baby under observation or try a breathing treatment.

Good luck, hope everyone feels better soon!

  • Thanks everyone - I have a call into the nurse. Our group has saturday appts. so I'm going to see what she thinks we should do.  I appreciate the advice!
