Bug Spray & Sunscreen

What brand sunscreen and bugspray is everyone using? DD is 13mths old and LOVES being outside so I want to make sure she is protected. We have a pool so im looking for a sunscreen that will last. As for the bugspray we have a lot of mosquitos in our area so i need something that protects against them. TIA!

For bug spray we always use Tea Tree Oil mixed with water.  We live in a very rural area (so no one is spraying) and we have woods behind our house.  The Tea Tree Oil doesn't stink (once it dries) and doesn't leave your skin sticky (in fact the opposite).  You can find it in the pharmacy section of your grocery store by the vitamins.  Also, if you do get bit- you can just put a tab of TTO on your bite and the itches stops and heals much faster.  Safe for all ages and pets.  We also use Grandma's Lye Soap in the summer as well vs. our traditional "winter" soap.  Bugs are attracted by scent and the Lye soap is a very pure form of soap.

  • Sunblock: California Baby and Badger Baby (mineral sunblocks, not chemical)
    Bugspray: CJ's
  • Yes, we like Badger Baby.  You can use FSA money for it.  Bug spray we adjust depending on circumstances.  We use a mosquito net over the stroller and long clothes with pants in socks when she is in the carrier and it's not super hot.  We rub on some Burt's Bees if we are not too worried.  If it's going to be bad and she will not be covered in a net, we use Off with DEET because although we don't want to use this all the time, it is recommended over mosquito-borne diseases.

I like the California babies and Badger brands for bug repellant. We have bird-sized mosquitoes in Louisiana, so bug protection is a must. Both brands work well and smell pleasant. For sunscreen I like the Blue Lizard or Aveeno.

My brain hurt from trying to figure out the key ingredients to want and to avoid so for now we use a thin layer of clothing and a wide brimmed hat!  We spend 1-1.5hrs a day outside but we go out after the peek sun.  One of the benefits to living in Canada is that most of the year it is too cold to need sunscreen!!

We use neutrogena baby, but it doesn't rub in well... most non-chemical suncreens are like that, though.  Any non-chemical sunscreen is fine (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the active ingredients to avoid).

To avoid?  Aren't those the natural "mineral" sunscreens?  I spent a bunch of time yesterday looking for one for my daughter and all the natural brands used zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, I believe.  I finally got Burt's Bees (a zinc based stick) because it was the only one I saw that was paraben and phthalate free.
As far as I know, yes, those are the ingredients you want. Maybe Theresat was thinking about the nano particles issues? EWG covers that here
  • I use badger bugspray and either Badger or Blue Lizard sunblock. I prefer Blue Lizard since it goes on a little easier, but the place I grab it was sold out and I opted for Badger..which works just as well just a little harder to rub in..although they have a great sunscreen face stick for easy applications
  • My poor DS has been getting eaten up by mosquitoes and he gets huge welts from the bites.....idk what is good to use on a toddler for bug spray.....as for sunscreen, my Dr said anything with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in it is great. And buy one for the face....a stick is best and a separate one for the rest of the body. You want a stronger coverage on their little faces. I would appreciate any advice on what mosquito spray to use! TIA
  • I recently ordered eco logical skin care for sunscreen.
