GTKY NBR: What is Your Style?

Hearing about many of your music tastes made me curious about each of your personal styles.

What is your personal uniform on a day-to-day basis? Are there any brands that you swear by? Do you wear a little jewelry, too much jewelry, or none? Do you like to dress up and go out? Please share and feel free to PIP.

Re: GTKY NBR: What is Your Style?

  • **child mentioned**

I hate that this is the first answer to your question, but my style is currently maternity-clothes-even-though-my-daughter-is-closing-in-on-one-because-I'm-hanging-on-to-my-forty-pounds-of-baby-weight-like-my-life-depended-on-it. Someone asked me today if I was pregnant. (Spoiler alert: no.)

I have always, always struggled with my weight, though (throughout my 20s and early 30s I had a closet full of every size from 6 to 16 because it just fluctuated that much), and so my style has kind of been whatever makes me look least fat, regardless of personal preference. Which makes me want to go back and slap some body-acceptance sense into young me.

I am seriously sorry for such a self-involved and derailing answer to your question. Here's an attempt to do better: not much jewelry. Wedding ring; didn't want an engagement ring. Wear silver studs most days (sleep in them), but fancier earrings/necklaces when dressing up. I'm busty regardless of weight, so I like simple necklines in solid colors, and lots of knits. I haven't bought real clothes in a while, but I like J.Jill's more fitted stuff. I'm only 5'3", but categorically refuse to wear heels.

Also curious about what my fellow bumpies like to wear!

@Davie813 After having DD, I went from carrying extra pounds on my butt and thighs, to carrying it in my belly.  I had a parent ask at a parent conference when I was due.  It was kind of awkward from everyone.  I remind myself the gift that came with the extra weight and just vow to eat healthier and keep working out.  Most women I know who have had kids, have some part of their body that they would like to change.  I think looking like a model after pregnancy is a standard that only 2% of the population can actually accomplish, but has unrealistically been set as the norm by celebrities.  Sorry for the soap box.

I teach 10 year olds and am on my feet a lot so I rock the legging long shirt look with flat shoes.  I also tend to wear pants and live for jean Friday.  I usually try to stay away from tighter shirts and prefer the more flowy shirts.  When I'm not working its jeans, capris, tops, flats or sneakers.  Jewelry wise I wear my wedding ring and a necklace or bracelet.  Earrings and make up are always an afterthought.

@Davie813 and @lcwed: Dude, what is up with people asking women if they are pregnant? Unbelievable.

My style is best described as thrift store upper middle class. I like finding previously-owned Banana Republic, Gap, and J. Crew. My neighborhood Salvation Army has a "brand name corner" that offers nicer brands at good prices. I got some Guess skinny jeans for $7 the other day. My MIL buys me a lot of Target Merona clothes that she gets discounted. San Francisco's weather is usually fall-like, so I am usually wearing a long sleeved cotton boat neck or thin sweater so that I can throw on a Patagonia "better-than sweater" jacket. I wear jeans constantly. I love Clarks Privo walking shoes.

I wear my clothes until they are threadbare. Buying new bras, socks, or underwear is so satisfying for whatever reason. I just got some real bras now that DS is weaned. I hadn't realized how saggy the Bravado bras were getting. Eek.

I miss dressing up. I work from home and take care of DS, so I rarely have the occasion to wear a dress or a nice pants outfit. I have some fun costume jewelry and scarves but I forget to wear to put them on because I'm always throwing DS on my back in the Ergo when we go out. I used to like to accessorize when I worked in an office. I've been looking at Stella and Dot jewelry online and love the necklaces and scarves.

As far as makeup goes, I stopped wearing makeup after having DS. I don't have time to put it on. I should use a little mascara and tinted lip salve before we go out. Just for myself. My personal routine is so poor that I sometimes I forget to brush my hair when I walk the dog with DS in the morning.

Style???? What's that? Ha! I'm NOT one of those "look put together all the time" moms. I do love funky shoes and necklaces. I really have to invest in some earrings since I have a bunch of non-filled holes in my ears (I moved too much and all that packing and unpacking made me lose my post earrings). I wear a lot of basics and maternity pants since I, too, am still carrying a lot of extra weight.

@URMySunshine77 @Davie813 and @lcwed The few times that people have asked if I was pregnant I looked them dead in the eye and with a straight face said "No, I'm just fat."  Shuts them right up and makes them realize what a dumb question to ask someone (unless you know for sure they are pregnant). I like messing with stupid and rude people.

Maternity pants for the win!  In all seriousness, when I first started wearing them I really wondered why everyone, including men, didn't wear them all the time.  The comfort...

And good for you telling rude people what-for!

  • Well for work I can wear anything. I used to LOVE getting dressed up few yrs ago when going out but after gaining some weight I hate shopping!!

My usual outfit when meeting up with friends is jeans...cowboy boots and flowy top. It HAS to be flowy lol. Obviously if a nicer place then heels. Skirts no. Dresses no. I miss though days. Having plantar fascia stinks so I wear NAOTS. Not cool :(

Jewelry..eh. The family I work for the 17 yr old has some nice clothes and shoes (Prada, Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik). I'm jealous. I do like to shop at Anthropology and JCrew but not as often. Too expensive with saving money up for this cycle. My boss usually gets me a gift card from those places and/or nice purse for bdays and Christmas. I have found stuff at Target that I wear.

My wardrobe is sad so maybe you all need to come dress me :)

The pregnancy comments? Wow. Can't believe pp say that.

  • When I was teaching I called my style "Ms. Frizzle chic", kinda cutsie stuff, I am in love with Anthropolgie.

Now it's kinda, what fits and washes easily.  It's sad really.

When the rare occasion comes to clean up I love putting on my jewelry and makeup.

I am still in shock by questions from rude pregnant questions people mentioned above!
  • kindershlitz - Ms Frizzle chic - awesome!!  I know all about Ms Frizzle.  I was a Montessori Teacher ages 3-6 for 2 years, I have my certification and have wondered if I'll be going back to teaching eventually.  We want to move out of NYC and probably Western Mass (Near Amherst).  I won't know how I feel about it until after I have a kid though.  I currently work in corporate, in events, conference logistics specifically.

I live in NYC so am forced to be a bit stylish, here goes:

To work almost every day I wear black jeans or dark blue jeans and a sweater or flowy top and a jacket.  In the summer I wear dresses.  My belly is my biggest issue, otherwise I'm pretty slender, but usually have some sort of bloating.  I am very strategic every day in my shirt choice and people don't notice I'm sure.  I almost always wear boots unless it's summer.  I have a couple pairs of Frye boots (LOVE FRYE).

My office is near Soho and it's really tempting.  Earlier this week I went to Joe's jeans to replace my black jeans that I wore out, and I got another pair. Not on sale. :( And then at Zara I found some black pants that are awesome and comfy! And look dressy. I might go back and get another pair!!  Just because nobody ever makes the same thing for long.  That annoys me.

On weekends I have been into the no-waistband thing, lots of leggings and more color.  Sometimes I want to be super Zen and wear all beige and white, or a little pink/lavender. It helps me feel mellow.

Jewelry, my wedding ring is my grandmother's, it is a diamond on a gold band. I have a gold twisted band from our wedding, it is simple and perfect for me.  I wear chunky necklaces and teeny gold hoops (sleep in them).

I used to be major hippy but living in NY has made me more styling.... black is where it's at.  I actually made a promise to myself that I wouldn't buy any more black, but just did. haha.
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.
Maya Arvigo Abdominal massage (daily self care), plus TTC meditations.
I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!

Work style is just based on comfort. I wear these hiking type cargo pants with a t-shirt and Dancos, hair tied back and minimal make-up. I work in therapy with patients and need stuff that I can move around in.
Days off I try and look cute in something trendy with hair/make-up/earrings, the works! I love scarves and tall boots! In the summer I opt for chunky necklaces and flip-flops.
    \:D/
  • I work at an ad agency, so I have to dress semi-professional. I'm fluffy (aka overweight), so always trying to find figure flattering outfits. I'm currently into leggings, flats, t-shirt dresses or flowy tops, jean jacket and scarf. I love jewelry. I always wear earrings. Either studs (pearl or sapphire) or turquoise dangles. I love natural stone or shell pendants on silver necklaces. Weekend ware: yoga pants, comfy cotton top and flips. Summer ware at work: sun dresses. I love to buy face products and make-up, though I really don't know how to apply it that well. Lip gloss, BB cream with SPF, mascara and a little eyeshadow.

I LOOOVE fashion! Always have. I work in the District Attorney's Office as a Victim Advocate so I typically dress up every day. Sometimes dresses with cute heels if I'm going to court. Other times jeans with a cute top and cute wedges or boots. I am a shop-a-holic. I have recently lost 30lbs so I have had to get new clothes which has been fun. :)
I care more about how cute the clothes are than what brand they are. I do like Miss Me Jeans, but some of my fave jeans right now are cheapies from Forever 21. I also usually find really good stuff at Ross. ;)

@tlc35 we did a tour of Italy for our HM too!  Must be a popular honeymoon destination.  Venice was one of the places we loved so much and want to go back to and spend more time.

  • I am a chef so my day to day look is black pants and a chef jacket. No jewelry, no make up (you'll just sweat it off in a kitchen). On the "weekends" I wear Ann Taylor Loft t-shirts and shorts or jeans. I live in Florida so flip flops are a year round staple, too. If I am dressing up I might wear Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, or the occasional Anthropologie piece.
