Baby Names

Gramma and Grampa names?

We talk about baby names, but what about grandmother/father names? I realize that baby will probably make up their own, expecially if it's the first grandchild. But do you/your parents have a name they want to shoot for?

My grandmother's name was Hilda (her parents were from Sweden) and she HATED it. So everyone called her Bunny (And my grandfather was Jack...cute huh? Bunny and Jack Rabbit). We grandkids called her Miko (the first grandson lived in Hawaii and that's what he dubbed her).

My aunt Kathy claimed Miko for her grandkids and my Aunt Sally claimed Nana (what my mom called her grandma). So I think my mom should be Bunny. She can't decide. Neither of us like the more traditional grandma names (Mimi, Grandma, and the AWFUL Maw Maw).

There is also Mor Mor (probounced "more more") which is Swedish for grandmother and what my own grandmother was hoping we'd call her.

My dad won't take picking a name seriously. He's a nut. His name is Doug and when i was in college he went around my dorm and introduced himself as "Fred, Natalie's dad"...To this day all those friends still call him Fred. Hey, it might be funny to have our kids call him Fred. LOL.

We called my mom's dad Bumpa (I have NO idea how this came about) but it was kinda embarrassing to call him that as a teen/adult...I don't think he liked it either.

My dad's parents are Ma and Pop

So there's my story. Tell me yours.

Re: Gramma and Grampa names?

  • I've never heard of claiming names to grandparents. I guess it's just not traditional in our family (?)

Well it's not really staking a claim. It's just that they had grandkids first and that's what the picked. My mom has 4 sisters and we are a SUPER close (and large) family. It would be a little confusing to have mine and all my cousins kids running around yelling the same name.

  • In my family the grandparents get to decide what name they want to be called.

    In-laws are: Grammie & Grampa

My dad & step-mom are: Papa & Mimi

My mom & step dad will likely be: Nana & Poppy

My grandparents were: Papa & Nina ... and Memere & Pepere

DH's grandparents were: Grampa & Grammy ... and Memere & Pepere

(for those of you who dont know...Memere & Pepere is very french....and there's a ton of french people here)

  • imagethenewmrsrussell:

Memere & Pepere is very french

    Those are so cute.

  • Mine were Bubbie and Poppie and Grandma and Grandpa

I don't mean to insult anyone but I have done a lot of traveling and haven't seen them anywhere but New England....

Therefore I just thought I'd throw it out there that they are pronounced "Mem-ay" and "Pep-ay"

The name itself just commands respect. It's very French-Catholic...

Although me and DH each had a Memere and Pepere...none of our parents chose to carry it on. Odd.

  • When I was little my mom let me call my grandmas and grandpas what I wanted to. I never met my grandpa so he was just pawpaw and I dont know what I would have called him otherwise.

I just called my moms mom maw maw because my older brother did and my dads mom we called her "Grandma (last name)" because she said that was respectable. My great g-ma I called Granny. I guess i'm just to traditional.

  • DS calls my ILs granddad and grandma because that's what the first grandchild called them. My parents chose to go by Mom Mom and Pop Pop.

Oh ok, interesting. I thought it would be Mem-eh-r/Pep-eh-r. Mem-ay/Pep-ay sounds more french-cajun to me.

  • My mother wanted to be called "Nana" since it's the least Mamaw sounding.  DS calls her "Nina".

My MIL actually wanted to be called Mamaw, hahaha, no way in hell would I ever request to be referred to as a Mamaw.

  • I must admit, I find this thread fascinating!

Both sets of my grandparents we call "Grandma and Grandpa"... ?

  • My dad's parent's were Mamaw and Papaw. My mom's mom was Granny. I never knew my mom's dad.

DH just calls all of his Grandma and Grandpa.

I can't imagine calling my parent's Mamaw or Papaw. Actually, I don't like anything besides Grandma and Grandpa. I guess it's really up to the grandparents.

  • I always thought the grandparents picked what they wanted to be called. DH's parents are Grandma and Grandpa (they have other grandkids) and my parents haven't decided yet what they would like to be called.
  • My moms parents were Mommom and Poppop and my dads parents were Mom and Pop. My great grandparents were  Granny and Grandpop          Lala and Grandfather      and Grandmom and Grandpa
  • Great question!

My grandparents: Granny & Papa (first name)/ Nina & Papa (first name)

My great grandmother: Grandma (last name)

DH and I don't have children yet, but our niece and nephew call his parents Nanna & Pop

My mom has mentioned she wants to go by Mimzy and my dad hasn't said. In our family the grandparents choose the name!

  • My parents are Grammy and Papi, and my dh's parents are Nonna and Granddad

  • My mother wants to be called Queenie. And my MIL wants to be called Meem. I know, I know... what happened to Mommom and Grandmom?
  • my parents are called grandma and p-pa.  my MIL is grandma last name... b/c we don't see her as much.

my grandmother = Oma to her great grandchildren (it is grandmother in german - pronounced "oohma".

we call my grandmother "grandma" and on my dad's side "nana"... and mom's dad was "grandpa" and dad's dad wanted to be called his name, Adam, lol... so it was "nana and Adam"

  • DH's parents are Papa and Grammie (that is what our nephews and niece call them and what our kids will call them)

This is the first grandchild for my parents and my mom throws around names (her latest is Gigi), but we'll see what they are actually called once our baby starts talking :) I call one set of my grandparents "Grandpapa and Grandmama" because when I was just learning to write and practicing their names I added the extra "pa" and "ma" to Grandpa and Grandma and it stuck :)

  • my daughter has is the first grandchild and she has named all the grandparents

she has a grandma, a nana, 2 papa's, a big mamma and a great grandma

  • I think that the baby will create the name for them.  So far my parents are calling themselves Grandma and Grandpa, but both want a special name, my nephew is just a year so he is not talking yet.  But I know his other grandma is Bochi.  I have heard of Mema (my husband calls his Grandmother that).  My grandparents were Ninnie and Ada (my older brother created those names).  What do your paretns want to be called?  Ask them, and if they have no preference then see what baby will call them when they can.  So exciting to wait for the new arrival, and have the new life in your family! congrats!
  • We don't "claim" names.  My grandma is called Bubba and she's the only one and will be the only one.  My kid's grandma is called Bubbie.  My aunt may be a Bubbie too whenever my cousins have kids.  My dad is Zaydie o my kids and my grandfather is still my Zaydie, but my kids call him Big Z.  My uncle may want to be Zaydie someday too.  My kids won't call him that so it won't matter what his grandkids call him.

  • I called my grandparents on my mom's side Grandma and Grandpa.  They called each other Babcia (sounded like boo-sha) and Dziadzia (sounded like jah-jee), the Polish words for Grandma and Grandpa  I always thought it was cute.

We always called my grandparents on my dad's side Gram and Gramp.  My parents have sort of adopted this with my nephew (sister's son), so we'll probably run with it.

I have a Nina who was originally supposed to be a a "Nana" but my oldest cousin couldn't pronounce it. I love her to death. Yay for Nina's!

  • Both of my Grandparents are Grandma and Grandpa.  If we were talking about a specific set, would would say Grandma and Grandpa M. or Grandma and Grandpa J.

What do all the kids call their mothers and fathers? Don't you already have kids running around calling "Mom" and "Dad" to their own parents? I guess I don't see why it would be confusing to have grandparents called the same thing.

  • My Mom's Mom was Grammie and Mom's Dad was Gordy (his name was Gordon and he didn't like grandpa). My Dad's Mom was Gramma Nance (name was Nancy).

My nieces and nephews call my mom Quita (KEY-tah). She did mission work in Bolivia and apparently they add this on to the end of your name as a term of endearment Rebecca + quita = Rebequita.

  • DH already has a nephew and he calls DH's parents: A-Ma and A-Gong. Those are Taiwanese for Grandma and Grandpa. So our future kids will likely call them the same. As for my parents, our kids will be the first grandkids (most likely) so it could depend on what they call my parents. For my dad, maybe Grandpa and Grumpa. My mom might be Mommom or Nana.

I was the 1st grandchild so I called my paternal grandmother Nanny and my grandfather Popo (poe poe). ?I made them up, don't ask me where I got them. ?As for my maternal grandparents they lived to far away to have cute little names.

  • My mom is the 4th generation of Gammy in our family...which is what I will be called when I have grandchildren.  My Gammy was married to my Poppy and his parents were just Minnie and Jake.  My father's parents were Nana and Grampa Bob.

DH's parents are Grannie and Papa, and DH called his grandparents Grandma and Grandpa.

  • In our family, we have:

Nonie & Pap, Ba & Ge, Deda & Poppy, Mema, Mimi, Nana & Daddy Bert, Mammy & Poppa, Pop, Grandmommy & Papa Arden, Granny & Grandaddy, Grandmother & Daddy Jack.

Layla chose some of them as the first g-child on my side. Others chose their own. My mom searched long and hard for what she wanted to be called ( I can't even remember what it was now, but L started calling her Deda- her name is Dena- and it stuck).

  • My Grandparents are/were (both grandfathers have passed on in recent years) Gram & Grampa (gram was always trying to get us kids to call Grampa "Poppi" but my fam knew he hated it and refused, but thats what my cousins all called him) and Nana & Papa.

DH's grandparents are Nene (NehNeh) & Dede (DehDeh) (Armenian) and Gramma & Grandpa

And our parents have a few months before they have to decide yet. If they don't, I'll doom my parents to Mugsy and Pops. LOL
