@ChristineBaker23 I'd play around with different bottles/nipples. I like the tommy tippe ones... we call them boob bottles because they look and are shaped like bewbs
@katekat8721 Unfortunately, tommy tippe is what she gagged on most recently. I'm thinking of trying the first years breastflow. It looks short. And boob ish.
Anyone use the breastflow? Oh and I know it's not flow that's the issue because she does the same with the paci and doesn't have the bottle in her mouth long enough to get milk. Maybe a sensitive gag reflex?
Its game over with me breast feeding.. I have inverted nipples.. We used the shields in the hospital but also using sweet toot suracuse... Well she got addicted to the sugar water and wont even begin to suck without it.. Well what they didnt tell us is that its a sedative used to calm babies down for shots and ivs.. Ughhh... So now without it she refuses to latch on we tried putting breast milk in it as well as formula to see if she will latch on with those and doesnt so I have been pumping and formula.. Hella sucks.
There are tricks to get baby back to the breast regardless of why they refuse to nurse. to wean from the sugary stuff one thing to do is use plain sugar water added to the breastmilk to make it a bit sweeter, and get baby nursing with the shield and then use less sugar water every feeding or 3 to wean off of it. You can also try pumping the breast to get the nipple standing, or use a nipple everter thingy to get it popped out, and spend a lot of time skin to skin with baby on top with ready access to the breast so they learn that the boobs are great place to hang out, the learn what a nipple looks like without a shield on it, and get over their anxiety about the whole thing a bit. Get an IBCLC lactation consultant on your side to help you out.
And if you do EP for a little while, keep trying, I've known babies as late as about 3 mos who had been just taking bottles who were able to go back to nursing at the breast.
Ahhh I wish I saw this earlier (Im not on here much anymore =\) but I have only been pumping twice a day because I can't be tied to a pump all day long and be able to live a somewhat normal life and getting like 4oz each time.. I think my supply is already deminishing.. Thank you though! We did try a few of those things with no success =\
Yesterday I tried to pump four times at 2-2.5 hr intervals and every time got barely an ounce. And LO was fussy because he couldn't get full when I nursed him. I got super emotional, cried, and ended up giving him formula fearing my breast feeding days were coming to a close or about to get complicated again. I had some serious issues in the first couple of weeks but have been having zero problems since about week 4. My sister said the drop in milk supply meant I'm about to start my period but I'm only 6 weeks PP? I thought I wouldn't get my period for at least 3-6 months since I'm EBF. And I read that once you do get your period you stop producing as much milk? Can anyone shed some light on this? TIA
Thanks @AmyG* !! You are like J14's own personal LC, you rock!
One last questions…Where yesterday I could hardly get an ounce pumping, today I've pumped 3 times and gotten 4 ounces each time (which is about 1-1.5oz more than I've ever gotten) And Ive nursed twice? Im just curious if its normal to fluctuate like that. It was a huge relief today to pump that much.
I just have a happy post! After 4 weeks with nipple shields I've been slowly trying to work towards ditching them... both babies are currently nursing shieldless at the moment! Woot woot!
LO cluster fed most of the day yesterday and was so, so fussy. She's slept most of today. She's only 2.5 weeks old. Could that be the 3 week growth spurt already? Do the growth spurts flex a few days like that?
Also, when is the best time to introduce a bottle of breastmilk? I have ti go to work for a half day when LO is 4 weeks old. Dad will have to feed her while I'm gone.
@AmyG* I'm going back to work next week so I'm trying to build up a supply to leave with the nanny. My DH also works late and takes the 4am feeding so I need a bottle for him too. That's why all the pumping
I have an lc at my pedi office that's great and I'll prob see her tomorrow at our 6week check up. BFing is so hard! I think it's amazing those types of jobs/certifications exist! I know they didn't for my parents and I would be lost without having her and this board to turn to. With all the knowledge and support you've shown this thread I think you should get some honorary alphabet soups behind your name
Baby Cora will not take a bottle or paci. The pacifier I'm not too worried about but I would like to be able to give her a bottle from time to time. When I try to bottle feed she ends up gagging violently then screaming (same with paci, even hurled everywhere one time). She is 5 weeks old and has taken a bottle twice previously but now all of a sudden she is not a fan. Any tips guys?
Be more stubborn than baby. Try a bottle every single day at same time of day (or try a totally different time of day if you thik she has more patience earlier or later in the day).
Try a botle nipple that looks more like your nipple at the end of a nursing session in shape, length and diameter. or try one that is totally different. try a firmer or a softer nipple. while super slow flow is best overall, at first try faster or slower flow to see if she has a preference.
allow her to open wide and take the nipple into her mouth, don't just push it in there or she'll gag. have dad or someone ele give bottle with you not around at all.
use breastmilk in the bottle, or try formula. try warm and try cold.
try when she's wide awake, or half asleep, calm and wants to suck but mostly full, or crying and starved.
But keep trying. don't give up and throw your hands up in the air.
unless you are a SAHM like me and then you give up and move on to soft spout sipper cups ;)and never give bottles.
Thanks for the advice/encouragement. Today was day three on the bottle front. I'm mostly getting tired of tossing whole bottles of breastmilk out. Tonight I gave daddy the bottle and made myself scarce. I also ran the nipple under warm water to make it feel more like home. She took it for about five seconds and that's it. Then I tried offering it to her by putting it under my armpit and holding her like I would to nurse her. She seemed interested but then she tried to latch on and it made her gag . (The gagging happens before any sucking so I am pretty sure it's the nipple not the flow that causes her to gag) I have some first years stage one breastflow bottles headed my way and the nipple looks much more like my own. Why do they make bottles with such long nipples on them? I was also thinking of trying to get a preemie bottle but I bet her latch would cause the nipple to collapse. I've heard they are a softer thinner plastic? I am a sahm but I'd like some booze occasionally and I need a date night!
I just have a happy post! After 4 weeks with nipple shields I've been slowly trying to work towards ditching them... both babies are currently nursing shieldless at the moment! Woot woot!
Wait...how did you type that and nurse twins at the same time? ....aliens...
I'm sure this question has been asked befor so please forgive me, but how long did it take you ladies for your milk to come in if you had a c section? I'm on day 5 and starting to get worried. LO is nursing great (killing my nipples with his crazy strong latch), and I know in making colostrum....but worried about getting my milk in? (We are supplementing due to jaundice but only about 10ml and only after a full nursing session). Thanks!!
@ElTrain5 Just curious how this worked out for you. What day did your milk end up coming in? I am 3 days post c-section and still waiting for my milk to come in. The LC I saw at the hospital this morning before I got discharged said that the fact I was on IV fluids for almost 48 hours could delay my milk coming in which scares me because LO has already lost a good amount of weight since birth. Anyways, hoping there was a happy ending to your story and I'm sorry if you posted it elsewhere already - I'm still catching up on all these threads now that we're home!
Thanks, ladies. She needs to suck to fall asleep, which is fine, but last night after 4 hours I was losing it. It was only night 2 and I know it gets easier, but in those moments a pacifier to give me some relief sounds amazing. Some stupid part of me feels like a failure if I give it to her. I don't know why. I don't think that way about anyone else so why so I judge myself so harshly?
We gave it the first night in the hospital because she was comfort sucking. Sometimes she takes it but most of the time now she doesn't need it or will just spit it out when she's done. No issues with latching. My LC told me that when it comes to comfort sucking she's all for using one which is why I didn't feel guilty about introducing it early.
@ohyealovely we started the pacifier on day three because she was comfort sucking so much, but I only gave it to her sporadically because I was worried about latch issues and I felt guilty giving it to her. On day four I called my mom crying because I was so tired, my nips were really sore and I felt like I couldn't calm LO down. My mom came over and said that LO is a comfort sucker and that I should just give her the pacifier and not worry about it. We started giving it to her more regularly then, sometimes she likes it and sometimes she doesn't, but it made all the difference for me! You are not a failure if you give your LO one! If it works better for you and helps you out then go for it!

Dont feel bad about it! I have been giving the paci to my LO since day 1. In the beginning i didnt want to it to her and felt the same way, but it really helps to calm her down and gives me some quiet moments. My LO has no problem latching on and i am currently EBFing. Sometimes it takes a few tries because of the way she puts her tongue, but she figures it out pretty quickly.
How much spit up is too much? Baby girl is spotting up after every feeding. It seems like a lot to me. She's down 7oz from birth weight. She's having enough dirty diapers, she just spits up. And today she's been so sleepy I haven't even able to keep her awake to feed longer than 10-15 min. I'm feeling like a failure tonight.
With my first baby, breastfeeding came so easily and there were no issues. This time is so different.
@babygabe614 - I had a c section and was put on a magnesium drip after so I was very worried about my milk coming in. I had the c section on a Thursday and there was no sign of my milk coming in by Sunday. I also had some feeding issues at the hospital so i was very worried and let it get the best of me. On Sunday night, I tried to relax and used some hot compresses and drank a ton of water. On Monday morning I massaged my breasts under a hot shower for a while. My milk came in Monday afternoon. I think relaxing was the best thing I could do. Good luck! Everything will work out one way or another.

It ended up coming in pretty slowly, around day 6. I feel like it's still slowly increasing but very slowly. I've been pumping exclusively for the last 24 hrs or so and have managed to get between .6-2.5 oz at a time, not much but enough to keep up with meal times. Hoping if I up the frequency of feedings/pumping it will keep upping the output. Good luck!
We gave our little one a paci at the hospital the second day. The nurses and LC said since he had such a good latch all ready that it shouldn't be an issue, and it hasn't been. Neither DH nor I really wanted to use the paci, but it has honestly helped my nips a bit, and helps to calm him when he is just comfort sucking, or we are in the car and I can't whip my boob out to feed him then. We have only used the soothie kind the hospital gave us.
My right breast, which also has a sore, cracked nipple, doesn't seem to empty and feels sore in the breast. Not red and no fever. How can I get it to empty?
I have what appears to be a pimple on each breast and I've noticed they are often itchy. Sometimes the nipple itches too, while LO is nursing. What could it be? Anyone else have similar issues? Maybe I've just never paid this much attn to my boobs! Lol!
@fsumom Can you put some lanolin on your nipples before you pump to kind of lubricate your nipples? I saw that on a YouTube when I was researching pumps while pregnant. It might help until you are able to get the next size up.
I've started doing that and it is helping. I'm going to Target this morning. In the meantime, my right breast is engorged now and not emptying so that's another issue. Ugh.

If your nipple is hitting the flange while pumping it is definitely too small and that will make you sore for sure. When you pump massage your breast downward to help the milk flow even after the let down. If you are more engorged on one side aim the pump towards that side of your breast and it will pull more milk from that area. I will aim the flange all different directions while pumping to get all the milk I can while putting downward pressure on the area it's aimed at. You can also put a warm washcloth on that breast while you pump. If nursing, do the same things. And if one side is more engorged aim baby's nose at the area that is most engorged. If it's the inside try a football hold, the top try side lying, under your armpit cradle hold etc.. And don't over pump. This will just encourage more milk to be produced.
I'm not a professional but these are tricks I've learned!

Down a bit of oz after birth is ok. down more than 10% is worry.
strip down to diaper, don't let baby be too comfy. cool washcloth on back of neck and toes, rub firmly on bridge of nose, sit up at the waist, switch sides back and forth and get baby nursing,
but 10-15 minutes can be ok if diaper count is high. You want to see a MINIMUM of 1 wet and or poopy diaper per day of age, or 6-8 per day after a week of age. But if things are going well you may see 10-12 wet and or poopy diapers.
I don't know how old baby is, but if you are past a week of age, and weight gain isn't increasing, that's when the focus on getting baby to nurse a bit longer on the first side may help to get more hindmilk fat in to increase weight gain.
Go see an LC with IBCLC after her name if possible to get in person help.

The premied nipples are used by a lot of bf babies without collapsing the nipple. so I'd probably give it a try.
Thanks for asking! I have not tried the bottle again in a couple days because I was waiting on the breastflows to come in. I should have them tomorrow! She is finally taking a pacifier though so I am hoping she'll take to the bottle better now. I will let you know how it goes!

I'm so confused. I bought size large and xl flanges and my nipples seem to expand to rub the sides of both of them. I have no idea which size to use. I can't say that either size is really all that comfortable. ** I decided to lubricate the flanges with olive oil and that really helped!
@wareagle1220 I'm sorry today has sucked when Cora gets like that I put mittens on her hands and it helps with the scratching.
@emotionlotion you are doing great! Sounds like you have a comfort sucker. The paci may become your best friend. He may get a little confused at first but he will figure out the difference between paci sucking and sucking for food. Just stick with the nursing, you got this! Yes he can go in the bassinet with the paci in. Enjoy your sleep!
@emotionlotion hugs to you. I'm right there with you. Something about the pacifier makes me feel like a failure. I've nursed all day long and I just need a break. I tried to give her the pacifier and she refused it. I don't think you've ruined anything. Breastfeeding is hard.
Is it possible to have your milk come in but not see a huge difference in breast size? We have been struggling since LO arrived on Saturday because she is now 6 days old and my milk isn't in yet, so we have to supplement to get her weight back up. However after starting our new nurse/supplement/pump routine that the LC gave us, I've been able to nurse her on both sides for about 15 min per side and then pump about an oz after that I can use to supplement the next feeding. Does this mean my milk is in, since I am able to pump a good amt and the LC confirmed she was also getting a good latch and taking in milk when nursing? My breasts don't feel large or hard/engorged like I have been told they would when the milk comes in so I'm confused.
My LO is clamping down hard on my right breast every time he latches on. My right side produces less than my left so I think it is a little more work for him. Once e gets going, it is fine and the latch itself is good, but he clamps down so hard it brings me to tears. There are no issues at all on the left. Any suggestions on how to get him to ease up? BF is much harder than I expected.
@babygabe614 I didn't feel more full or any engorgement until a week or two in. I could only tell because what I was pumping was a different color and there was so much more than previously.

If milk is coming out of your boobs that means your milk has come in. It is possible for you to not get all engorged and start squirting everywhere. My milk came in slowly this time around and it wasn't that noticeable. If you can, try nursing all on one side. She will get more hind milk which has all the fat in it if you can get her to stick to one side. This will also give you a fresh un-sucked boob to pump and you may be able to get a little more milk (if an ounce isn't enough). Keep up the good work momma!
@elsa1688 Thank you! Maybe mine is just slow to come in because the volume and color has definitely changed significantly.
@ChristineBaker23 I will try that! She tends to get bored or fall asleep after 10-15 mins on one side, so switching her helps wake her up some but you made a good point about the hind milk so I will try to get her to stick to one side for the next one to see if she can empty the breast and get to it. Thank you for the advice!
@JESNYC - I am dealing with the same exact problem, right side is the worst. We are actually taking a 24 hour break from actual breast feeding and just pumping because I completely fell apart yesterday. I hope you find some relief soon and if you find a magic solution please let me know!
@Taymiller - for now I am just starting him on the left and switching him over once he is a little less intense. It is helping but I'm not sure it is a permanent solution. I will definitely report back if I come up with anything better. Good luck with the break and take care of yourself!
I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't find it. The blisters in ds's lips, how long til they go away, or what can I do with his latch? He's getting enough milk and gained plenty of weight in between appointments, so is it something I should even worry about or just let it go?
