Question about poop. Spinoff of the CIO post.

So the train of conversation in the CIO post got me to wondering.  I feed my baby as much as he wants whenever he wants.  I make more than enough milk when I pump during the day but he usually only eats 8-9 ounces during the day when I'm gone and feeds at least 3 times before bed after I get home.  He nurses so much that he spits some back up.  He never spits up with a bottle because he just doesn't drink as much.  So I know he is taking in more than enough when he BF's.  However, he is smaller for his age. 18th percentile for weight, 45 for height, and 70ish for head.  He has some massive poo's.  Basically all that is leading up to this question.  His poo is usually massive and most of the time has yellow covered white chunks almost like cottage cheese curds.  Is this the fatty part of the milk just not breaking down and passing on through?  Is this what most EBF poo looks like?

  • Oh, I have another question but don't want to post another thread for NCDR.  When did your baby learn how to roll from back to tummy?  The pedi put this as a 6 month milestone.  I thought it was more like an 8 month milestone.  I need to go google....

  • Yep, totally normal. I miss the EBF poop days! So messy, but so nice to just throw in the washer and not have to scrape off an insert (or undies during PT days).

Totally normal, and don't worry about where baby is on the growth curve.  As long as he follows *his* growth curve & isn't falling in percentages you're fine.

G rolled from back to tummy for the first time around 4 months, but didn't do it regularly until closer to 6-7 months.  D didn't roll at all until he'd learned to crawl at around 8 months.

  • Thanks guys!  I'm not really worried.  He went from the 24th percentile to the 18th for weight but he jumped up in height and head size.  I kind of attributed it to him being so active already.  He loves to "stand" and he would rather sit upright than leaning back.  It still takes a lot of energy for him to sit up right with all the wavering and stuff and he's constantly exerting energy to try to sit up when you lean him back against something.

  • I have in my notes that DD3 rolled back to tummy for the first time at 3.5 months and the consistently at 4 months. She also rolled tummy to back for the first time at 4 months. She didn't start army crawling until 9 months and then crawled with her tummy up at 9.5 months. So she was average for some milestones and on the later side for others.

DD3 spit up a lot more when she was ebfing. She was around 16% for weight and 95% for height for a long time. Around 8 months she started climbing percentiles and at 1 year was 66% for weight and 95% for height. I wouldn't worry about percentiles at this point if his growth is steady.

  • the poop sounds totally normal.
Our pedi had rolling back to tummy as a 6 month milestone. DS has rolled back to tummy a total of 2 times in 9.5 months. Once the day before 6 months then once last week. He has rolled tummy to back since 2 days old. No interest in crawling though. Dr isn't worried yet. I think they look at overall muscle tone and if they are doing other things before they worry.

  • I think my pedi is biased since he has 6 perfect children.  Also, I think my baby is going to end up with a helmet for positional plagiochephly. He's got a big flat spot that we just can't get rid of.  :(

  • It's like yogurt consistency.

  • Logan is a piggy and he is a skinny boy. People can't believe how much he eats. He wasn't even on the charts for weight for a few months. He was even on formula for three months and didn't fatten up. Don't worry about it, if you know he is eating enough.
