Cloth Diapering

Favorite ON diaper

First off, I'm sorry if this has been posted a lot already. Apparently I am a bit board search challenged. I am just wondering what experienced cd Mamas like as far as ON diapering. I use cloth for daytime, but I still use ON disposables. I just don't know what works well for ON. I have a 6 month old boy, who is about 16 lbs. I just purchased Thirsties duo wrap cover with a hemp prefold that I was tempted to try for nighttime. The only cd brand I have at the moment that I've used is Kawaii minky snap diapers with mf inserts.

Re: Favorite ON diaper

  • Our ON diaper is fitteds (I've used a few different kinds of bamboo fitteds, and they've all worked well). We've used wool as well as PUL covers, and I liked both.

I like best bottoms covers with a doubler and a cotton/hemp insert for overnight.  Recently we have started using fitteds and covers overnight, and that works really well too.

I've been using BG AIOs and they have worked well so far, but DD is only 3 months old. I know that a lot of the ladies around here prefer fitteds for ON because of their full coverage, especially for heavy wetters.

  • We have had good luck with double stuffed BG 4.0s. DD is a heavy wetter, so sometimes the MF gives way to compression leaks, but overall they work really well.

I love prefolds and a doubler with a PUL cover.  We also occasionally use fitteds & have good luck with them, but I have a hard time getting them clean in my HE FL washer.

  • We have to use fitteds with wool covers for overnight.  He saturates both inserts of a BG 4.0 within a coupe hours and will leak out of those.
The only fitteds I have now are some Motherease and some Twinkie Tush Night Nights.  The TTNNs are by far the best, but in a pinch I stuff a NB prefold into the Motherease and cover with a Woollybottom cover and usually he is just a bit damp in the morning, not soaked.

  • We use fitteds too. Usually its a regular Twinkie Tush (not the Night Night) with a Blueberry Coverall. I don't have a super soaker, by any means, though. I opt for the fitteds because she loves to flip and roll all night and sleep on both her side and her tummy. We had some leaks with the Best Bottom inserts when she did her nightly gymnastics.

  • GMD red edge prefolds and Thirsties hemp.
  • Fitteds and covers or double folded flats. We bedshare so I'm unwilling to try other options.

  • Don't mean to hijack the thread but figure someone could help me too. We're the same - we use pockets, AIOs and prefolds during the day. We've been using disposables at night.

I saw someone said they use prefold and hemp insert. Do you lay the insert on top or under the prefold? Does it
matter? I was thinking of trying a prefold with a bamboo insert for nights. LO is 8 wks old and a fairly heavy wetter. Thoughts?

We used pockets with a tummy pannel for the longest time ( Kawaii GNHW and BG 4.0.). It was great while she was tummy sleeping durring the super soaker phase. Now we are using hybrid style fitteds or a regular fitted with a hemp doubler under a cover.
  • Sbish snapless w bamboo doubler under a BLueberry coverall. I'm pretty sure that I can get rid of the doubler now that he quit nursing at night though.
Exactly this and we quit using the bamboo doubler when we night weaned. The two soakers it comes with are plenty now.

  • We've had great success the past six months with a best bottoms small hemp overnight insert underneath the cotton in an OBGE. My 11 month old hasn't had a leak overnight with it. When I've used disposables overnight, he has leaked, so that combo must be pretty absorbant!
  • We use fitteds. Some esbaby and lots of good mamas.

In general cotton will absorb faster than bamboo which absorbs faster than hemp. So probably the most effective set up would be either prefold snappi'ed on with hemp/ bamboo between the prefold and cover or if you trifold you could wrap the doubler in the prefold. Really since its all natural fibers you can do whatever you want though.

  • I have been useing a hemp insert, a thin zorb insert and a bamboo microfiber blend stuffed in a sunbaby pocket. She is a pretty heavy wetter but this has worked well so far and is fairly thin.

I use angel wing fold ON, and the hemp gets wrapped up in the front, but kinda sticks out towards the back. So towards the front it's cotton against skin, then hemp, then cotton. Further back it's hemp against skin, then cotton.
  • Thank you @CLLDLL and @NVandGZ. I've been doing the newspaper fold during the day and usually put a fleece liner in. I'll try what you guys suggested.

  • @CLLDLL‌ I have an HE FL washer as well. I was thinking about trying the fitted for overnight. Why do you think these washers don't clean fitted diapers well? Thank you for the advice, ladies! I am grateful, and will try some of these you have mentioned!

I think some people have no trouble getting them clean in an HE FL. I didn't at first, but once he hit the toddler stinky pee stage it went downhill for us. We have really hard water which makes getting things clean a challenge anyway. Add on that I work full time so Im not able to soak ON fitteds like a lot of ladies on here have luck with, and I just think prefilds are a better option for us.
