Cloth Diapering

Fish smell after 1 use :(

So I just washed a batch of BG 4.0 and they came out smelling like a fish tank... I re-washed them... Still smelling the same :(

I already washed a load of dirty diapers and those came out smelling fine... But now this other load smells gross.

The first load that came out smelling fresh went like this...
Front load HE (kenmore he3t)
Express wash, hot then cold, 2nd rinse, no spin, a half dose of tide powder.
Normal cycle, hot then cold, 2nd rinse, high spin, reg dose of tide (3 tablespoons)

The downside was there was a faint yellow stain on his poopy diapers (EBF).

To hopefully avoid the stain I tweaked the cycle after some advice. I switched to cold/cold for the initial express wash. I also didn't use any tide for this first part because someone mentioned buildup concerns.

I'm assuming I should just go back to what I did the first time? Will the fish smell go away if I wash them again?

  • I don't understand the names of the cycles bc I have an old TL. On your initial rinse, you need to make sure that the water is spinning and draining out. Or you're washing in poo and pee water. And EBFS stains...no way around it. Try sunning when wet. That'll get the stains to lighten

  • Yeah, the express wash is a quicker wash cycle (30ish min). I do no spin with this cycle so the diapers stay nice and heavy for the longer wash cycle. I also use this cycle as the way to rinse and drain away the poop/pee.
  • EBF poos will almost always leave a light stain, unless maybe the poop was super fresh when the diaper was washed.  The sun always takes them right out for me.
I always do my initial rinse on warm, I figure it helps release more of the pee and poop before the wash cycle.

The only time I have ever had fish smell is when I used a diaper cream containing fish oil. Even though I used a liner, it got on my diapers......nasty fish smell! Did you by any chance use any diaper creams?

  • I do the no spin trick as well and have an Kenmore FL. I have to do a regular or express wash on warm, before doing the cycle where I turn the spin off. So, for me I'll do a regular warm wash, then do a delicates cycle (warm/warm) with the spin turned off, then my hot wash with detergent. I find doing a really really good pre rinse with lots of rinsing and spins before adding detergent and actually washing them works greatly.

    Nope no creams yet.

Thanks! I'll give that a try!
