Cloth Diapering

Do I need anything else?

Hey ladies! I'm new to cd-ing but really want to make this work so when I saw some amazing deals, I went ahead and made the plunge and purchased:

1 bummis super brite cover
2 flip covers
2 blueberry coveralls
18 bummis organic cotton pre-folds
3 snappis

What do you think? Will I need more covers? I got the above for $90 so I'm willing to invest a little more. They are all one size or 15-30 lb covers and pre-folds as my LO is almost 10 months and 15 lbs.

Thanks for helping this new cloth diaper mama out! :)

I think that's a good place to start and get your feet wet. I think you'll just barely have enough prefolds for EOD washing. You also need some system to store dirty diapers (pail liners x2 and a trash can or large wet bags x2) and a wet bag for your diaper bag. It would be nice to have some CD safe diaper cream on hand just in case, although My LO doesn't tend to get rashes since we switched from disposables almost a year ago. What detergent are you going to be using? Keep in mind if your LO is a heavy wetter the cotton prefolds may not be absorbent enough for over night, so you may want something special for ON or some people use disposables ON. Once you are more in the swing of CDing you could branch out and try other brands/styles if you'd like, or stick with prefolds and get more cute covers!

  • @haileyq‌ do you have any recs for pail liners? I've heard leaving it open is better for smell...

I got a bunch of samples of CJ's BUTTer and some Rockin Green detergent as well. She's not really a heavy wetter but I figured I'd start out just doing it during the day for now and ease my way into it.

    Thanks for the suggestions. :)
  • It will be easier for EOD washing with one more cover and 1/2 dozen more prefolds, but I would get started with what you have, see which covers you like best and how well you like the prefolds and go from there.

If you have absorbency issues ON you may need to buy some hemp doublers or go with fitteds if you want to use cloth ON. DD is 2 and diaper-free during the day, but I ON diaper her in a toddler prefold with a hemp doubler.

I don't have a lot of floor space so I use hanging wet bags on the back of the bathroom door. Sorry, no help with the pail liner recs! I hear a lot of people having stink issues with Rockin Green not getting their diapers clean enough, but some people do have luck with it. If you start having stinky diapers, you just may want to keep that in the back of your mind. Oh, and I do leave my wetbags unzipped.
  • I use planet wise diaper pail liners. They've held up nicely for almost a year now. No delaminating issues or leaking issues. You'll need two. One to use while the other gets washed.
Plus, I saw today that nickis diapers has them on sale with free shipping.

And yes, it's better to leave the lid off the diaper pail to allow air flow and reduce smell.

  • How are you getting rid of poo? Liners, dunk and swish, sprayer? Also, be prepared to switch detergents if you start to have issues. I hear Rockin Green is notorious for not getting diapers clean.

  • You've gotten some pretty solid advice so far, so I'm not sure there's much I can add. I will say, though, that IMO Blueberries and Flips fit a bit on the large size, so if you feel like they're bulky and want to add more covers to your stash that are a bit trimmer, you might consider getting a different brand (maybe Rumparooz or Thirsties?).

  • Thanks for all the awesome suggestions! I'll have to check out some smaller covers!
  • I never had a problem with Rockin Green but only used it for a month or two. I switched to something I could buy locally.
