Breaking it to the Boss

When did you break the pregnancy news to your boss?  Did you arm yourself with FMLA knowledge before telling them?  Or was it a quick convo where they just said cool, get back to work or more in depth?

I work as an independent contractor... So I'm not sure how it's going to go over. Not telling boss for a few more weeks. A coworker knows already only because she's 10weeks ahead of me. With us being the only two in our office other than boss, we definitely need to coordinate our leaves etc.

  • i told ,y boss pretty early on. 6 weeks. I have a very unique job as a youth ministry director and manage a team of 25 volunteers. i also help run the main office at our church. it's a family atmosphere and i really need as much time as possible to plan for my 3 months out of work this fall.winter.
she was great and told me to make sure to take all the time i was owed and to use my vacation.sick time so i wouldn;t lose it. she also lets me head out a bit early and has been great if i need to skip an event and pass it to a volunteer.
  • I told my boss the day before yesterday, at 12 and a half weeks. I knew that I would wait for my Verifi blood work to come back right from the get go, no matter how much I wanted to shout from the rooftops. Honestly, I had been expecting my boss to be displeased. He's a nice guy overall, but stern and extremely hard to read sometimes. But he just grinned (I've worked their since January and I can count on one hand the number if times I've seen him truly smile), but more over, he seemed genuinely pleased. It was such a relief because I've been dying to be excited about this baby, but with needing the blood work, and dreading my bosses reaction, it was hard. Thankfully, the blood work came back saying she's healthy, and my boss isn't acting like a jerk and I really feel like a huge weight has been lifted.

  • I told my boss at around 13 weeks with my first. I made sure I read our policies and employment agreements before hand. We didn't get into that though right away, it was just a big congrats and some chatting about my appts, etc and we sat down and talked about the details of my leave later.

  • Last time I told around 16 weeks. I had to wait until she came back from mat leave. This time I'm in a new position with the same company but I'll prob wait til end of 1st tri or start of 2nd tri to tell. We don't work in the same state and hoping to be able to tell her in person rather than over the phone or email.

I don't think we will talk too much about leave right away. More planning will be needed in a few months

I told my boss at around 8 weeks and told employee health services at that time. We kept it on the downlow until 24 weeks when I had a small bump and was ready to share the news. I'll tell this job at 12 weeks after my 12 week scan. My current supervisor is 15 years older than me and has a hard time getting pregnant, so he is kind of outwardly rude about other expecting parents. I won't be excused, but at the end of the day, his opinion does not matter to me.

I'm going to tell my job at 12 weeks. That way not only will that give me time to make it through the first semester, but it will also give me an opportunity to show my company that even though I am pregnant I will still continue to perform (and thus not be cut out of future plans ;) ).

I work in a dept. with all guys.  I told me boss with #2 at 7 weeks because I was having some bleeding trouble (which I didn't specifically share).  I wanted him to know because I wouldn't be lifting heavy patients, etc.

With this one, I figure I will mention it maybe around 12 weeks or so.  I've been having a typically pregnancy this time around, so I'm not concerned about restrictions.

Also, when I told him,  It was pretty much like... "hey just wanted to let you know I'm having a baby in August".  He says, "ok cool".  And that was about it.  We talked about leave and whatnot closer to my EDD.

I told my 1 boss at like 6 weeks (she's covering the emergency room right now since our nurse manager got a new job... but she's the ob/L&d nurse manager so she was ecstatic) and the other job I told today.... and i'm a day shy of 10 weeks. I think it really depends on the kind of job you're doing. I don't want to really "announce" my pregnancy yet but if you work in a situation where you might be exposed to certain things that aren't safe it's better to let them know asap. good luck!

I told my principal at 10 weeks.  I had 3 appointments in one week and I wanted to let her know why I was going to be missing so much time.  She was really supportive and told me to take as much time as I needed.

I'm not at all worried about what they're going to do while I'm gone.  I'm a teacher and there are loads of candidates ready and willing to fill in for me.  And, being in Canada, I'll be taking from November through the remainder of the school year, so he/she can do as he/she pleases with my classes for the rest of that year.
