more flats questions

We are traveling in July and again in Sept.  I convinced DH that for the price of a pack of disposables, we could get a dozen flats, then in the hotel rooms, we could wash flats/covers in the sink, hang them to dry and they would be dry by morning.  And we could use these for all of our travels, so in the end, it's cheaper!

Am I over-simplifying this, or does it sound reasonable?  Can I survive with just 12 flats, washing every day (DD will be 7 months in July, and 9 in Sept)?  How long do they take to dry (I'm leaning towards OsoCozy flats)?

Also - I remember seeing somewhere had flats 10-20% off for the handwashing challenge, but now I can't find it.  Anyone remember this?

I've never handwashed flats, so I don't really know what I'm talking about.  That being said, I think you could totally do it.  My flats dry super fast.  As long as it's not really humid they line dry in a couple hours.

My only hestiation would be ON.  At 7-9 months G was at his heaviest ON wetting period.  A flat or even two wouldn't have cut it.  I would have needed hemp or bamboo doulbers at least.

  • I do have some help doublers I could use at night.

How long between machine laundry do you think pee-diapers can go?  I think the longest we would have between access to machines would be about 4 days.  I could bring my fitteds, and just use them at night (she rarely ever poops at night).  But would waiting 4 days to do laundry be too gross?

I think once or twice going 4 days would be ok.  I'd soak the fitteds after you take them off her though.  Otherwise you might end up with ammonia build-up.

The other option would be to get a super small pack of sposies to just use for ON.  G has been using size 4 sposies for a LONG time, so it's pretty likely that whatever fits for your first trip will still fit for your second trip.

I could be wrong, but I would think hand washing in the bath tub might be easier than the sink, if you have that option wherever you are staying.  And I was going to say the same about the ON fitteds.  If you rinsed them out in the morning, I'm sure they would be fine for 4 days, but I would probably let them air dry, not sit in a wetbag for 4 days.  Mildew and whatnot.

  • You could always string a line from the clothes hanger hooks above the passenger seats and hang diapers to dry during the day if you'll be some place where you will be parked at for a while. For that matter you could handwash the ON fitted before leaving and hang from a headrest or two while driving. Assuming you'll have a car on these trips of course.

  • That's what I do on trips and it's always worked great. I can give a bunch of tips later if you want. If the flats won't work overnight and you don't want to use disposables, you can always bring fitteds and wash them so they aren't stinky but not reuse them until you've machine washed them.

I'll take any tips you feel like sharing! :)
  • I have not tried hand washing flats, but we do use them overnight - two flats folded together with a Thirsties velour doubler - and it keeps DS leak free for at least 12 hours. I didn't have to start adding absorbency with him overnight until he was over a year old.

If your baby is not yet on solids, you can probably expect the poop schedule to change a bit, as well as the wash routine involved. Maybe your baby will have ploppable poo by then, and I sincerely hope so for your sake, but my kid is nearly two and I'm still waiting for it to happen consistently. I used a spatula and bucket when our sprayer broke last summer, and I thought it was horrible. What is your plan for your trip?
  • I'm interested in the suggestions as well as this is my plan for a fall vacation

I hadn't thought about poop!  lol - we don't have to deal with that yet.  I do have some flushable liners (hoping to get through "peanutbutter" phase).  I guess we'll see how the transition goes.  We're starting on solids, but not enough to change poop yet.  She always wants our food, then we give her a taste, and she decides she doesn't like it :)

I had to hang dry my diapers for a week (our dryer broke).

Just make sure they at open and allow for circulation. Mine would dry over night in our basement. However they are a bit crunchy.

I'd order 18 flats so you can double them up if needed. Or if they don't dry fast enough. If nothing else you have enough to wash two days and then wait for a washer.

  • Sorry - another question (or 4).  I was looking at the OsoCozy ones on amazon, but will 27" fit when she gets bigger?   Should I get larger ones (or will larges be too big on my tiny 13-14 lb 5-month old)?

Does OsoCozy sell a larger size?  Or is there somewhere I can get larger sizes for <$2/diaper?

  • CLLDLLCLLDLL member
27 x 27 is considered OS.  They fit on my 25 pound 34" guy.  I like the fit of GMD larges (29 x 29) better for this age, but the 27 x 27 are fine.

  • The osocozy shrink to a slightly smaller rectangle when washed. I'm using them both padfolded and snappied on my 25lb 32" 22 month old.
