Trouble TTC

Horrible Appointment

My appointment did not go the way I thought it would. First, I had to go to a different office since it was the weekend. I had a different doctor and he didn't explain anything. He introduced himself and then started the ultrasound and didn't talk about what we were seeing at all.

Second, the Clomid prescription was not for a cycle at all but a Clomid challenge test. I logically knew that we should do all of the testing before I started a medicated cycle but I guess I still thought since they mentioned a prescription that we were starting. Big disappointment.

Third, as we were leaving DH asked if they had the results from the initial blood tests we took. The RE looked like we were inconveniencing him as he looked it up. Nonchalantly he says "AMH looked good, positive for chlamydia antibodies, and everything else looks normal". We just froze there in silence for a couple of beats. I asked him "does that mean I have chlamydia?". he says " no, it just means that you were exposed to it at some point and we don't really know what the result of that was" He must have seen my stricken look because he says "This just means that your HSG is even more important. Any more questions?"
I couldn't believe it. I have gotten STD screenings along with my pap smears so I don't understand how something like this could have been missed. I also don't understand the whole exposed vs. having it thing. I just feel so shocked and confused and upset. DH says we shouldn't jump to any conclusions until after all of the tests but I just feel hopeless.

On another note the day three labs were normal, I start the Clomid on Tuesday, go for my follow up lab and US on Sunday. If I can get it scheduled I will prob get my HSG on Friday. I've been trying not to think about it all day because I just have so many worries and I feel like there's nothing I can do about it until all of these tests are done.

  • If it makes you feel any better, my RE is pretty sure my blocked tube is from an undiagnosed chlamydia infection. It happens. It's frequently asymptomatic, and often enough you end up on an antibiotic for something else that clears up the infection, though sometimes not quickly enough to prevent damage. Which is why the doc said it doesn't mean that you "have" it- just that you might have had it in the past.

It's the most common STD, and it responds well to both azithromycin (z-pack) and to doxycycline (commonly used for UTIs) and my RE assumes that my infection was cleared up by doxy since I've had chronic UTI's since early adolescence.
This really does make me feel better. Thank you so much.

  • Sorry about that icky doctor! I hope you don't have to see him again. Hopefully if you need a weeked visit, your RE will be doing his weekend a month or however they schedule it. :)

Do you think it would be possible to start an IUI while doing the Clomid challenge test? My doctor isn't having me do one yet (not sure why) but when I read about it, it just looked like you take a low-end dose of Clomid like normal, and see how you respond.

I hope the HSG results are good!!

  • I'm sorry, that doctor sucks! I hate when they offhandedly mention some important information and don't give any info on it. That's what it was like when they told me I had a hydro tube. "Oh, this? We're pretty sure your Fallopian tube is blocked. Nbd" ugh. Some doctors need sensitivity training in a bad way.
Hopefully your own doctor can provide more clear information.
  • I'm so sorry you had a bad appointment. I've had similar experiences where doctors mention something like its nothing and scare the crap out of me! They really need to work on Bedside manner! ((Hugs))

  • I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. I am so livid for you. I would told him "I'm paying you for this service and this is a heartbreaking time for us. Your sensitivity and willingness to teach us and take time to explain our test results is important to us. If you can't abide by that, we will be taking our business elsewhere. Now, please explain those results to us and why we are taking these next steps." When he's threatened with losing out on money, his bedside manner may just grow right before your eyes. Good luck. I hope things improve or that you can find a better doctor.

  • I'm sorry that the RE was so rude to you.. That makes me upset.

I really hope everything goes well with your HSG, and that you don't have to deal with that asshat again.
  • *ticker warning*

Ugh, that is awful! I also recently saw a new RE, and was not impressed by his bedside manner. I try to feel better by thinking that, in the end, it is his medical skills and knowledge which will get me PG, and not his interpersonal skills. But STILL, these doctors should remember that they chose an emotionally-charged field, and that their day-to-day work is someone else's Big Deal.

I hope your next appt is better!

  • Thanks ladies for the support. I emailed my doctor last night because I was so upset. He write me back first thing this morning and explained everything. He said he tested my blood for active chlamydia as well and I don't have it. He was really reassuring and I feel a lot better. My HSG is all scheduled for Friday so I'll be able to see if my tubes are blocked.
