Swim Lessons

Has anyone done swim lesson with their 1 year old? I am just wondering what they consist of. I live in Florida and we are frequently at the lake, beaches, and pools so it is something I'm interested in. I also want to know how many lessons, how long, and how frequently you did them. I'm asking around for this info but thought you ladies may be able to give me insight! TIA

Re: Swim Lessons

  • I have. We did 10 sessions 1x a week for 30 minutes. For us it was mostly assisting them with front and back floats. We sang songs, did submersions and would toss little floating toys and help them swim to get it. Basically it is mostly about giving them water comfort.

  • We've been doing lessons once a week for 30 minutes since A was 5 months old. Basically we just work on getting the babies comfortable with the water. We sing songs, work on back floats, work on submerging them and practice kicking.

  • We do one lesson a week for 30min. The theory is to teach that water is not scary if you know how to be water safe. We practice going under water, going from edge into water, floating and turning onto back to float. Even with less than 3mo of lessons, I feel much better being around pools and the beach (we also live in a beach community). It's absolutely worth the time and money IMO.
  • We did ours recently through the park district and it was pretty much a waste. There were 7 classes once a week for half an hour and we sang the same two songs every time and held them in different positions, trying to get them to kick their legs. I guess it got him used to the water, but there wasn't any instruction on floating or submersion. I'll be going somewhere else next time for sure.

We did what PP mentioned, but after a few months, I decided that we weren't learning anything new and summer is pretty much here, so we quit and I'm taking him to the community pool to do it on our own there. It will be at least a year before they changed his routine at the class. When it gets cool again, I'll go back to the lessons just to keep him consistently comfortable in the water.

We were going to do a class at the family fitness and aquatic center we have here but R needed tubes so that was out. I think they do 10 week courses. Now with summer here we will just go the community pool in our neighborhood and let him splash. We can't do any real swimming this summer : (
  • We have been going since E was about 20weeks old. We go once a week for 30mins. We do submersions, turns, monkey walking around the edge of the pool, spurting, blowing bubbles, jumping in. The main aim is water safety so that if she falls in she knows how to turn. We do something different each week and I definitely think it's worth the money.

Thanks for all of the info! I think I've found someone to do them, I'm excited now! DS has tubes so first we need clearance from the ENT who we will see next week. I was informed that I should ask about fitted earplugs. Anyone have experience with this?

Early June mom here. We started swim lessons at nine months, and my LO is now just over 11 months old. We are doing private lessons of 15 minutes each for 12 weeks. They try to teach him how to float on his back, paddle on his stomach, blow bubbles under water, and stuff like that.

Ours start Saturday and I can't wait!  For the little littles it's only 5 weeks for a half hour.  It's really just to get them used to the water.
