Cloth Diapering

Should I buy only "real" cloth wipes or supplement with tshirts?

I received a set of thristies fab wipes for my shower and love them! I think they will be great for getting poo off. My original plan had been to buy a whole set of these but they are pricey! I used cut up t-shirts for family cloth that I only use for urine. I was wondering if maybe I should make some wipes from the old t-shirts that I just use on pee only diapers so I can buy less of the fancy wipes. Thoughts? TIA!

  • I'm in the process of making wipes from flannel. It's super simple and inexpensive!

I made most of my wipes from flannel (mine are double layered, but you could make single layer ones if you wanted). Some of the flannel I purchased form a fabric store, and some of it came from a flannel sheet. You could also look places like spot's for lots of wipes. They'll be cheaper than new, but you'll get the convenience of pre-made.

  • I only use the thirsties for patting dry. I love my GMD double-sided terry/flannel wipes for clean-up.
  • My wipes are double sided OBV/baby loop terry. I don't like flannel wipes at all, nor did I like jersey wipes. I also like baby wash cloths as wipes too, and you can get cheap brands for under a dollar a cloth.

Short response: I would get/make a variety of wipes until you figure out which kind you like best. It would suck to buy all one kind and then you don't like them.

  • I don't really care for cotton knit as wipes. I have made a bunch from flannel and bought some of different materials. My favorite store-bought ones are Grovia. They're solid white, but they are fluffy on both sides (unlike Thirsties) and stay really soft. They also don't tend to try to roll up at the edges like my Thirsties do sometimes.

  • I would use flannel instead of t shirts. I am sure you should have an extra receiving blanket from a shower of know someone who will give you an old one.

  • What's family cloth?
  • I found we had very few pee only diapers in the early days. And I agree that flannel is a great cheap option.
  • Family cloth is what you use instead of toilet paper, I think.

  • Love my single layer flannel wipes. I use the double layer ones to "dry". This guy has super sensitive skin and I have a ton I wouldn't use otherwise. So it makes me feel good to use them.

  • I think T-shirt material would be fine. You might want to do two layers if they are thin. I picture poo leaking through, especially if you wet them first.

I have some Thirsties, some obv that are similar and fluffy, some flannel, and some cheap baby washcloths.  I like have a mixture of soft and fluffy and some thin and textured.  I use fluffy ones to dry him off, and the thin ones to get in creases.  And FWIW I think you might want a lot more than 36 wipes.  I think I have over 100, but it sometimes takes me a couple days to put away the clean laundry.

I just got 10 Finding Nemo baby washcloths for like $4 at Kohls, and picked up a 24 pack at TJ Maxx last month for $4.

  • I made my own wipes out of receiving blankets I dont use and a flannel sheet set I got on clearance for $12, I just make single layer but may try double once we start solids.

  • Also, as pp said I think 36 is a low numbet I have over 50 and i'm making more.

Baby washcloths! I made my own from flannel receiving blankets that are OK but I much prefer my baby washcloths. Also agree that 36 is not enough, I have so many, definitely more than 50.

I say maybe a variety is best, since some PPs like different types for different purposes.
And because it is a matter of preference, as I feel exactly the opposite of this quote.

  • I had several old towels that I cut up for wipes. I had considered buying some, but I'm totally happy with the towels.

  • Thank you all! This is really helpful.

I guess I'll have to get more wipes! Maybe I'll do a little of everything to see what works best for us.
