Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Overly aware of LO's sounds?

So LO is two days old, and we have him in a bassinet in our room. I'm finding that every little sound he makes wakes me up, and it's very hard to sleep between feedings. Has anyone else experienced this? (I'm guessing it's fairly common?) does is get better with time, or do you have any suggestions to cope?

Re: Overly aware of LO's sounds?

  • Once we move our babies into their own rooms, we all tend to sleep much better. However, I still wake when I hear DS flip over in bed (across the hall, door shut, no monitor) or DD get out of bed (down the hall, door shut, no monitor). I can sleep through DH showering and getting in bed, but when my kids wake up, that's a different story.

I feel your pain, my LO is so noisy!  I wouldn't say that it's gotten better over time... it's more like I've gotten used to his sounds.  I can tell which noises are ones that he's making while he's asleep and which ones are him fussing, working towards crying.  I still hear each and every single noise though my husband seems to sleep through all of it  :-/
  • I slept much better when we moved DD to her own room. Has been sleeping in her crib since 2 weeks.

I definitely hear every little coo, hiccup, cough, and sigh.  But honestly, it reassures me that he's still breathing.  As long as he's not crying, then I find it reassuring.

This. Also, becoming a mom has made me a really light sleeper. I feel like a pin could drop on the other side of the house and it would wake me up!

Thanks all for the advice!  After a week I'm starting to get used to the sounds he makes.  If he's really fussy and won't settle, I send him and my husband into the living room until the next feed, and that seems to help too.  When he's sleeping soundly I'm able to sleep as well.
  • Yes, it's normal and totally made me insane. DD didn't last more than one night in our room. We were all waking each other up and I was responding to every noise which wasn't good either.

DS made it a week (his room is on the farther side of the house so I waited longer) and then I "kicked him out" ;) too.

Both of my kids also developed better sleep habits and patterns as soon as they had their own space too.
  • We use white noise (an app on the iPhone dock)- I can still hear when she cries, but it drowns out all of the other sleep noises.
