Ice, ice, baby!

OMG y'all, I need an intervention. I cannot.stop.eating.ice. Normally I HATE ice. I have sensitive teeth and I think ice crunching is a tacky habit. But for the past three weeks I've been absolutely obsessed with it. I empty our ice bucket at least once a day, which is quite a feat considering how much it produces.

I like any and all ice right now, but the stuff from our ice maker is the best. It makes big, highly aerated cubes that are so soft and yummy! The longer it sits, the more honeycombed it becomes and the easier it crunches. I've found that I can fill up my 34oz Bubba Keg with ice and water and put it in the fridge overnight, and in the morning when I break it up with a knife it's practically like a slushy. I eat ice ALL DAMN DAY and can't control myself. I won't even dump out my drinking cup at the end of the night if it still has ice in it. I'll actually strain out the ice and put it in a separate cup in the fridge to eat the next morning.

And my blood work is all completely normal. I'm not even borderline anemic. I ate a lot of ice when I was pregnant with DS, but only in 2nd tri (summer of 2011 when temps were 100+ here for weeks in a row), and my obsession never reached this level.

As far as pica goes, it could be a lot worse. I could be out in the backyard eating dirt with a soup spoon. But still...I'm actually kind of embarrassed about it. And DH is annoyed that there's never any ice left for him. Poor abused DH.

I'm so glad I only have 19 days left. Our ice maker can't handle much more of this!

Re: Ice, ice, baby!

  • I'm obsessed with eating ice, too, and was last pregnancy (and normally can't stand it!). I'm assuming my obsession suddenly came on this time because I've gone from borderline anemic to actually anemic, though, since I was last pregnancy.

I, too, am obsessed with eating ice lately!

Part of the reason I can't wait to go into labor and be in the hospital is to crunch on the amazingly yummy ice chips that the hospital uses. I constantly refilled my water bottle at the ice machine in the hospital cafeteria during our birthing classes and I can't wait to go back and get another fix lol.

  • Me too!
All my blood work has come back normal but I HAVE to have ice at all times during the day. I don't know if it's the crunch and the cold mixed..but I literally crave it and it's SO strange.

Glad I'm not the only dirty shameful ice cruncher around here. ;)

I don't think I've ever been so obsessed with anything in my life. It's so creepy.

  • Oh ice... I love love love it too. We don't have an ice maker but the gas station two blocks away has the best ice ever in their fountain drink machine and they don't charge for it! I go and fill a 44 oz mug every single morning on my walk with Shorty and eat it. Sometimes I need a refill too! I am very anemic, though. Even with taking iron and a prenatal every day.

Yesterday the cashiers all greeted me and Shorty by name and one of them came to help me refill my cup. :\"> Shorty got a free sucker.

This is me! I bring my glass of ice water and another glass full of ice with me every night to bed and eat it all through the night. However, I am anemic and read that ice cravings were a side effect of that so that's what I chalk it up to.
  • I used to be anemic several years ago when I was 100% vegan and never noticed an ice 'craving'. I also wasn't pregnant..so I wonder if that means it would go away after baby is born?

We have birthing classes at the hospital every Monday and I always send DH into the faculty lounge to fill my cups with those amazing ice chips (he's a saint around these parts since he's a Fire Fighter and all the older ladies love him)..and then I feel embarrassed as hell chomping on ice for 2 hours while someone is teaching a class. She'll be talking about breathing techniques and then there's me..chomping away.

  • I have an ice obsession too and completely understand that it is amazing when it's got lots of little bubbles in it and gets "soft". When I was in the hospital last week they only let me have ice and OMG it was the best ever! They're like little pellets and SOOOOO yummy! I was completely satisfied eating just ice even though I haven't had a meal in 20hrs. But I found out I am anemic so OB gave me a prenatal with higher iron. Though I still love me some ice! haha

OH MY, yes. I thought about posting about this, but I've read it's pretty common. I fill up my big tumbler with crushed ice from our fridge every morning and I get to work and just munch on it. Also when I bathe DS1, I eat ice. He has gotten so used to it he says "I wanna try ice!" And he makes me feed him little ice pieces while he is in the bath. I've created a monster! Haha I also legitimately crave it at times, like after lunch. I just get this desperate feeling that I need something to crunch, but not any sort of crunchy food, it must be cold and refreshing.

I worry a little because I also have a weird desire to eat sponges right now but obviously will not be giving into it. And I loooooove the smell of rubber. My son has these new elmo shoes that have that new rubber smell and I always have to take a big wiff of them when I'm around them. My SO basically thinks I've turned into a freak lol oh pregnancy...

  • Oooo, I'm obsessed with ice too! My levels are also normal, but I can't stop eating ice. Nice to hear I'm in good company!

I oddly "craved" the smell of hot tap water. Weirdest thing ever.

I've been craving the smell of rain and that smell when you turn the air conditioning on in the car, lol.
