Help! Seperation Anxiety at night

I'm at my wits end, and so so tired. LO goes down fine at bedtime, most of the time is put down drowsy and puts himself to sleep. The past couple weeks, however, he won't stay asleep. He has started seperation anxiety during the day, so I'm getting pretty familiar with the "OMG my parents aren't within eyeshot" cry. This is the exact cry we're experiencing at night when he wakes up. And he gets himself into hysterics.
I've tried patting his belly, letting him know I'm there, and putting my shirt in the crib with him. The only thing that calms him is coming into bed with us. It works instantly and he's out like a light.
That's a habit I don't want to continue because I don't sleep well with him in my bed.

I don't know what to do. Nothing in his bedtime routine or bedroom has changed. So I don't know what the issue is. Any advice would be appreciated. I hate seeing him so upset, and don't know that CIO is the right option for this situation.

Re: Help! Seperation Anxiety at night

  • My LO has been doing the same thing the past week. I don't think his case is separation anxiety I think for him it's that he's more mobile and wakes himself up moving then gets startled. He went from sleeping thru the night to going down at 730 and waking at 9, 10 and 11. Luckily just giving him the pacifier and soothing him with gentle whispers works some of the time or else it's nursing back to sleep. Hoping this phase is short!

  • Same situation here. I'll be following.
  • Unfortunately I have no advice just sympathy. We are experiencing the same thing. We actually moved from bed sharing to a crib in our room about 3 weeks ago and at first she was out like a light for the whole night. Slowly she has started waking up more and more and now she's down with no problem at bedtime then after her first wake up can not be soothed back to sleep unless in our bed. Ugh.
