Cloth Diapering

Fitteds and wetness

Is it normal that fitteds are soaked on baby? Our 1 month old DS wears predominantly NB fitteds and when we change him after two hours the diaper is soaked up front (where he pees obviously). DH feels really bad for him sitting in the wetness, should I be concerned or is this normal? Should we use a fleece liner to keep him drier? Thanks!

  • It is the same if they are in prefolds.  Any diaper where there isn't a 'feel dry' layer between the baby and the absorbent material, the baby will feel wet.  Most babies don't seem to mind.  I make sure to get his skin completely dry at changes by patting his skin with a dry cloth wipe in all his creases and letting him have a few minutes of naked time before I put on the next diaper.  He loves it when I play with him on the change pad with crazy kicks and flails.  He's never had a 'wetness' related issue.

  • Yes, it is normal that they are wet, but when you say "soaked", that could be a sign that he is outgrowing the absorbency of nb diapers. It is quite possible at 1 month, though fitted usually last longer as they are quite absorbent. If you aren't having leaks then this is probably not a problem.

My son was sensitive to wetness and it made him break out and get really red, but only if we let him go more than 2 hrs without a change, so I think if the wetness were bothering him you would know, either from redness or fussiness.

Is it soaked in the back as well when you change? If so it's definitely time for more absorbency. I'll admit, the first cotton fitted I tried on my son I was really shocked that it was so wet... I don't know why I thought it wouldn't be so wet? It's the absorbent part of the diaper after all.
