Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Switching from formula to milk

My son is only 10.5 months but I know at a year you are supposed to switch to whole milk. Just wondering whats the best way to transition him off formula and to milk? Should I mix half formula and half milk for awhile? Anyone use those toddler formulas? He does only drink 3-4 bottles a day and I plan on slowing transitioning off the bottle as well.

Re: Switching from formula to milk

  • With my daughter we just stopped formula cold turkey and gave her milk. She didn't notice a difference. I never tried the toddler formula, I didn't find it necessary.

Some say half formula/half milk until they get used to it and then switch fully to milk. We aren't there yet but I'm curious too!

I was curious about the toddler formula and if anyone uses it.

I saw that Gerber Goodstart has one for 12-24 months. I honestly do not see why it would be needed as opposed to regular whole milk.

  • I think some pedi's recommend that a baby stay on formula past 12 months due to growth/low weight issues. Unless your pedi recommends it, moving on to whole milk should be fine.
As far as transitioning you can do either. You can change to milk cold turkey and see if he/ she takes it or do half and half for awhile.
