Positive FFN in 2nd tri?

If you had a positive FFN (fetal fibronectin) swab in 2nd tri, how far along were you when you delivered. What precautions did your OB/MFM take? Thanks!

  • I'm tagging @letsgobowlingx because she tested positive and her and baby girl are still going strong :)

  • Why did they do a fFN test? Have you been having other issues?

Although I did have one, it was much later on and under different circumstances, so my experience isnt that helpful. I was told a positive wasn't an indicator of imminent labor, but that a negative should provide some peace of mind.

  • @PurpleIris30‌ I spent 2 weeks in March in the hospital due to excessive swelling. They were able to get the fluid off but then my BP started going up as well as having protein in my urine. My OB was worried that I was developing pre-e really early and since then has been super cautious with me. My BP is good again and my kidneys are dumping less protein, but he's still keeping a close eye on me. The nurse called earlier and said to stay on modified bed rest and they'll be adding an u/s to check my cervix at each weekly appt.

Yep mine was positive at 27 weeks. At 28 weeks I went to L&D to have contractions stopped, luckily they didn't dilate my cervix, but ever since then I have to go in for a weekly NST and U/S to check my fluids.

The fFN test actually means NOTHING unless it's negative. So I honestly wouldn't worry about it!

I'm 35w2d now and haven't had any "episodes" since. The weekly visits actually become quite annoying haha.

ETA: I should add that I have a singleton. Having twins I know you're already considered "high risk" so they monitor you closely to begin with.

Thanks! I'd read where a positive result isn't very reliable in determining when labor will happen, but was worried my OB would have me on strict bed rest and getting steroid shots. I've been having weekly appts for the last month and since I'm home 99% of the time it gives me something to look forward to. lol

  • A negative is the only result that actually means anything. So many things can cause a false positive (sex, vaginal exam or u/s, your own fingers being inserted into your vagina, etc.) that they don't consider a positive result as indicative of you going into labor unless you're presenting with other symptoms (contractions, dilation, etc.)
