Cloth Diapering

Stripping question^

When I have stink issues a hot water strip is sufficient, however, I have noticed the absorbancy of my inserts is declining. Some of them are bad. They are not repelling, they just do not hold near the amount of liquid they used to. I have extremely hard water, could hard water bulidup be causing this loss of absorbency? Even though I do not have any stinkies, would an RLR strip be a good idea? I have never used RLR, but I just bought some to have on hand and now I really wonder if it would help with the loss of absorbency.  (Microfiber inserts BTW)

  • It could help, but I am pretty sure that this is partially just the nature of microfiber.

With extremely hard water, it is a good idea to to try the RLR strip and see if it helps.
How is your wash routine? The way you worded that made it sound as if you deal with stink on a regular basis- thats not normal. If so, there could be a problem with your wash routine that is also adding to the absorbency problem.

I do a warm rinse, hot wash, cold rinse and then an extra rinse. I use Tide powder on the hot wash. I do have issues because of the washing machine :( it is an HE front loader and it NEVER uses enough water. I have stink issues with ammonia if I do not add water during the rinse cycles. I use a pitcher and pour water into the soap dispenser during each rinse. It is a pain! I am hoping this problem will be over because my mom just gave me an old top loader that we are getting set up in the next day or two.

Would you suggest stripping the shells and inserts or just the inserts?

  • What is RLR? I keep seeing this mentioned and can't figure it out.

It is a laundry treatment that you use to soak diapers in to remove mineral and detergent build up. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001T8QIVW?pc_redir=1398892132&robot_redir=1

You can use washing soda or brands but RLR is the most popular.

Are they shells as in pockets, or as in covers? If they are covers I wouldn't bother, but if pockets it might be a good idea since you are having stink issues also. Then you can start fresh when you get your new washer set up.

If it's build up it probably wouldn't hurt to strip both. Don't soak anything with PUL/TPU longer than an hour though. Inserts can be soaked for 3+ hours.
