Traveling with a newborn...?

I just got tickets for Oprah's Live the Life You Want Event in Miami at the end of October (YAY!!!). It's a two-day event at a convention center...Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Obviously, this is not the best time for travel, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Oprah! My mom, two aunts and my mom's best friend are all planning to go. I doubt I will be ready to leave LO for the weekend, so I'm planning to take him with me. Children under the age of 2 are admitted free-of-charge, and it says they'll have a nursing room available for mothers. My mom and aunts think we should be able to bring LO with us and take turns stepping out of the auditorium if (WHEN) he is fussy.

How crazy are we to think this might work?! My other option is to bribe DH into traveling down to Miami with us so he can watch LO during the event. However, I would obviously need to take breaks for pumping.

  • It sounds like they are pretty accommodating for women with young children.  I don't think it would be that crazy.  It would probably be crazier chasing a toddler around the convention center.  (No experience, though).

I agree with this, plus people are pretty nice about seeing new babies and knowing they fuss sometimes. Especially women, and I bet this will be packed with women :) I also agree that a newborn will be way easier to travel with then a toddler. Sounds like you've got plenty of arms to help when needed!

About as crazy as I am.. FI's bday is 18 Sep. Baby girl will only be at most, 3 weeks old at that point. The only thing he wants for his birthday is either OU v Tennessee tickets, or tickets to Rangers v Braves (Braves are his favorite baseball team ever). One would require us to drive down to Dallas with a newborn, the other would require us to only drive to Norman, OK which is like an hour away.. but neither place is infant friendly. Still not sure how this is going to happen.
  • H and I have a "planned" trip to New York with some friends for a long weekend for December. I think H is still up in the air about it. We had planned on going to see Lion King on Broadway, which I am so excited about. I asked the friends if they would be okay with us bringing the LO and they were more than happy for him to come, because I don't know if i will be ready to leave him behind. Both my mom and MIL have offered to keep him. I'm all for it, whereas H is more skeptical. So, I'm not 100% sure if we will go or not!

We will be moving (likely cross-country, possibly internationally - the Army hasn't let us know yet) with a 2 week old (or less) baby. This sounds like a walk in the park ;)

  • Thanks for all the feedback, ladies! I was hoping it would be doable and sounds like it will be! Thankfully, I'll have lots of helpers and it's not like we'll be doing much besides sitting around.

I guess this will be a good opportunity for me to get the hang of nursing in public, too!

  • I think you'll be fine. At that age, your LO will probably be napping a lot still and hopefully is easy going enough to sleep in a stroller while you are out and about! I traveled a few times with DD at that age and it was easier than traveling with a toddler.

  • I'd do it. It's so much easier when they are little. I could totally do it with a baby but with my 16 month old would make me crazy if I brought her.

I think it would be easier to have LO with you at that age than be away and have to pump all weekend.

Newborns are pretty good travel companions.

@chase16‌, I've actually found sporting events to be fairly kid-friendly assuming you're not sitting in a heavy drinking section. We've taken DD to MLS games since she was about 6 weeks old. I see lots of other mothers there nursing infants (usually with a cover, but not always). Just look into hearing protection and you should be fine. We use children's ear plugs on DD but they make headphones too. I'd be more worried about a long car ride.
  • As PPs have said, it is doable and much easier than going with a mobile baby or toddler. A baby carrier or sling would probably help a lot. My kids always slept best when out if they were in a carrier. Have fun!
