potty training and pull-ups

For those that have used them, are pull-ups worth it?

My daughter is telling me when she needs to go, and then going when I put her on the potty...but taking the diaper off and putting it back on is a pain.  I've had some friends suggest pull-ups and some that have said skip them - I'm wondering if just putting on the padded undies would be the better way to go.  She's still wearing diapers at night.

Any advice?

It depends on what you are going for. Pull-ups are diapers. They are absorbent and your LO will not necessarily feel wet, so the only benefit they offer in terms of potty training is ease of removal. Most PT experts recommend going straight to undies if you're seriously trying to PT and only using them for sleep. But, be prepared for accidents.

We're just starting to experiment with undies the last couple of days because DD has reached the point of holding it until we get to the potty and asking to use the potty in public places. Even with that, she still wet herself during dinner last night and I had to strip her and wash the booster seat down before finishing dinner. I'm going to continue diapering for naps and bedtime, mostly because I still have a few boxes of diapers to get through. After those are gone, I will probably switch to pullups for bedtime.

  • Try looking at cloth diapering websites. I bought training underwear from blueberry for DS1. I loved them. It contained most accidents, but he could feel he was wet.  I only used pull ups at bed time or if we were traveling and not near a bathroom.  If you are thinking about using them sign up for their emails. They have sales for 'irregular"  and notify you through email. I bought most of ours "irregular" and can't find what's wrong with them.
  • We are in day 3 of potty training here. I actually haven't even been using undies on him right now. It was getting on my floor regardless and it's saving me from constantly doing laundry. I actually think it has helped a lot so he can see what his body is doing. I did get a pull up and put one on him and he said, "yay, diaper!" I'm afraid he will treat it as a diaper when he wears them but I do plan use them for sleeping and when I think it's safe to leave the house again (at first anyway).
  • Thanks for the replies - going straight to undies makes the most sense to me.  We've tried them a couple of times and she loves that she is "wearing what mommy wears", but she still peed in them, she just told me after the fact instead of before :-)
  • They are great for when you're just practicing which is what we 'll be doing for awhile.

  • Exactly what @ELF4321‌ said, IMO. If you aren't worrying about actually training yet, you could do pull ups for ease of removal like she said. But I would go right to underwear when ready to 100% train since they need to feel wet and pull-ups obviously don't do that. My lo has absolutely no interest in the potty (will occasionally ask to sit on it but doesn't pee). It will be awhile for us still!
Same here. Sophia has been asking for pullups at my mom's house (left over from my nephew) but she will sit on the potty and say "pretend" and not go.
