Is there a right way to time contractions

Is there a right way/position to time contractions to accurately gauge if they're progressing or will 30min-1hr average take care of that. I use an app to actually timing them but is there a right way as far as sitting standing laying or should I be moving around

You time from the beginning of one to another. If they are "real" position changes shouldn't make them go away or space out too much. Once I was in real labor they were every 2-3 mins when I was walking or rolling around on my yoga ball, if I laid on my side then they were more like every 4-5 mins. Once I hit transition they were every 1-2 mins no matter what I did. When they are real you'll most likely know. Everyone says that and it's frustrating, but even after 3+ months of BHs I knew.
