Baby Names

Carissa?

I found this on magicbabynames.com and then confirmed (??) it's a real name on behind the name. Thoughts? Is it too close to the Kinsley, etc cutesy K names?

Also, for anyone struggling magicbabynames generated lots of ideas based off of names.

Re: Carissa?

  • I dont think it's in the same ball park as Kinsley. It's been around for a while...wasn't she the main character in Clueless?

I like it. I like all of the -arissa names, but won't use them due to a negative association. It may be slightly dated to the 80s, but I think it's a really good name.

  • Wasn't there a show Clarissa Explains it All? Maybe that's what you are thinking of?

I am struggling to find a name to pair with big sister Delaney. I like Chelsea but got meh reviews on it here.

  • Carissa has been around for a long time. I knew a Carissa in high school and I graduated almost 20 years ago.

I think it's more of a tried and true name than the Kinsley stuff going on now.

  • I grew up with more than one Carissa, and I've had students named Carissa.

I wouldn't put it in the same category as Kinsley as Carissa isn't made up and it's been around for a while.

    It's not a name I like a lot personally since it's NMS and I find it a bit dated, but I wouldn't side-eye it.

  • I also know a Carissa.

It's pretty.  Of the -issa names, I prefer Marissa or Larissa.

  • I know one adult with this name and I've never cared for it, it seems dated to me.

  • I grew up with one, and I like it. (I do not think it falls in the Kinsley, etc. cutesy trend.)

I happen to like Calista and Marissa more. Oh, and Cressida... My newest GP name.

  • Like pp, it is not like Kinsley to me. That said, I don't love it. I do love Marissa!
  • It's definitely a real name. If memory serves me correctly, it first appeared in Spenser's Faerie Queene (1590). There was a character named Charissa ("Ch" pronounced like "K" b/c of Greek origins). The name came from Gk "charis," which means kindness (where we get the word "charity").

I like it a lot (and not just because I like Renaissance epic poetry).  It's a pretty name with a lovely meaning.
  • I've known several Charissas (it seems a lot of pastors/seminary grads go with this name in honor of the Greek word "charis," usually translated "grace" in the New Testament) and one or two Carissas. I can see how it might seem a bit dated but I like it. It's a pretty name.

  • Carissa is one of my favorite names, but we couldn't use it because it sounds like we smooshed our first names together. I think all the "issa" names sound a smidge 80s/90s, but I don't think that's a bad thing.
  • It reminds me too much of Clarissa (Explains it All) and makes it sound extremely 80's/90's to me.  Otherwise it's not a bad name.

@JMU_Bride09  the main character in Clueless was Cher :-)

  • @SCP081206‌ and @Pepper6 thanks for setting me straight ;) I don't think I've ever actually seen Clueless haha
