Illness question - TMI warning

Ok, so here's the thing. I thought I had the flu back on Friday as I had a fever of 103 and then I was up all night throwing up. But since Saturday it has moved fully into my GI tract and it's looking more like Salmonella poisoning. I've had flus before and this is nothing like it, I've never had anything like this. Basically I've hardly eaten anything since Thursday and when I do try to eat something, even something small, it results in many trips to the bathroom for the next several hours. TMI warning: no more vomiting but it's coming out the other end like water. Literally. I know I'm dehydrated and I'm trying to drink water, and stuff with electrolytes, etc, but it still makes me have stomach cramps and trips to the bathroom. Totally SUCKS. I am up so many times during the night and I'm exhausted. Today is my first actual day off where I don't have to go work, so that has been extra fun working every day since I got sick.

Questions: has anyone had salmonella poisoning before? I read it can take up to 7 days to work itself out of your system if it's a minor case. But can take months for your bowels to return to normal. FABULOUS.

I feel awful for Ava cause I have no energy to do anything with her, so I have turned on Bubble Guppies yet again for her as I plunk myself down. If I stand too long I feel like I'm going to pass out.

How long should I wait before going to see a Dr?

Thanks for reading if you made it this far!

  • You sound very dehydrated. I'd consult with your doctor.
    Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I guess I should probably call the Dr, but our family doctor is a total dolt so I try to avoid going unless absolutely necessary. We badly need a new Dr (just me and my H, Ava has a pretty good Pedi). I keep hoping it gets better....
  • It sounds like some kind of virus. I agree with PP, I would worry about getting dehydrated. Drink small amounts (like take a few sips but not big drinks and one time) and drink room temperature things. According to my doctor/pedi cold stuff is rough on the stomach/intestines. It usually takes 3-4 days for it to run its course (diarrhea/vomiting) but if you cannot keep anything down you should call your doctor. We love stomach bugs in our house, LO has had them 3 times now and my H and I 2x each. It usually takes us a week to feel better and 2 weeks before we feel normal again.
I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks laides! I'm still not any better so unless there is a dramatic change for the better by morning, I will go see the Dr (either my own or one at urgent care) tomorrow.
  • Oh goodness @zyas‌! I have no advice that wasn't already given, but I'm glad you're going to the doctor tomorrow. I hope they can help and that you start feeling much better very very soon!
