Why do I google things?

Okay, so I had an ultrasound at 14 weeks and I noticed later looking at the photos that the later photos she took the more heart-shaped my uterus looks. But no one said anything and the 1st-3rd photos I have look totally normal. But of course I googled it and read all kinds of scary stuff about Bicornuate uterus. Am I making a big deal out of nothing? Top photo is beginning of ultrasound. Bottom photo is end of ultrasound.

  • Yeah leave Google alone. My OB put strict orders on me the first time around to stop using Google. He said Just call me! There is no point in working yourself up over stuff that they can correctly answer for you.

  • That's the placenta!!! Not your uterus. ;)

  • That's kind of what I thought @Emerald27‌! How can you tell though?
  • It just looks like the placenta to me...the darkness, shape, location in relation to baby. I'm not an expert, but I had a lot of ultrasounds when I was pregnant with DS because we were concerned about placental insufficiency...so I saw that placenta every week. :P

Don't we have a sonographer on the board? I wish I could remember who that was...

  • Okay! Hopefully it's not a big deal, I don't have another scan until 19 weeks. Which is a month away!

That would be wonderful if there was one on the board!
  • Mine looked different at my 12 and 13 week ultrasounds. In one of them it looked very kidney bean-shaped and in another it was more oval.

  • I had a similar experience at my NT scan. Everything looked "normal" to me and then in some of the later photos, there was a bump, but mine was on the bottom. I asked about it and the tech said it was a contraction. She said that tiny contractions are happening all the time and we hardly feel them.

Here's from earlier in the session:

And one of the last ones where you can see the bump/contraction:

  • Step away from dr. google. Nothing and I mean NOTHING good ever comes from trying to self diagnose.

I actually have a bicornuate uterus, and it's not all bad. Most women don't know they have one until they give birth. But from what I see, that heart looks like the amniotic sac.

    Don't worry and don't google!
This. The heart shape you are looking at is the amniotic sac not the shape of your ute.

  • Ask your doctor if you're concerned, but ultrasound images are very fluid. The outlines (especially of fluid-filled organs) can change based on pressure from the probe, pressure from other organs, etc.

  • I have a Bicornuate Uterus and they can see it on the ultrasound. I'm sure they would have said something if you had one too. And even with the shape issues, I have a healthy two year old and had no issues in my pregnancy with him. My OB said she's not even worried this time since things went so well last time.

  • STOP GOOGLING. Last time I did that I went down a serious rabbit hole and only stopped when I almost fainted. Literally. I started sweating and had to lie down. Pretty good indicator that what I was doing was not helping the situation.

My process is: first (if not deeply concerned) The Bump forums, making sure to skip any threads whose subject lines strike fear in my heart; second (if still worried, or something truly seems not right), call the doc.

Side note, just in case there's any residual worry about your ute, my sis has a bicornuate uterus and gave birth in February to a healthy, very active baby boy. She had a full-term pregnancy. The baby basically stretched the heart shape into a big ole' circle, and by her third tri the ultrasound techs couldn't even tell she had started out bicornuate. (Just one experience, I know, but it was a good one.)
