C-sections

Stairs following csection?

Hi Ladies, new on this board since I learned baby girl is breech and I'll most likely be having a csection in the next 2 weeks.  I have a question regarding going up and down stairs once returning home.  Our house is set up on a hill so there are some stairs to go up either through the garage or through the front door (basically no way to avoid stairs!).  Also, the master bedroom is on the 2nd floor, so that's another set of stairs to go up.  Is that too much as soon as I return home from hospital?  I'm assuming a lot of people face this and have to get upstairs to go to their bedroom and/or nursery.  We could sleep in our downstairs guest bedroom for a few days, but I really feel like I'd be more comfortable upstairs if it's possible.  Thanks in advance for any input/experience on this :)

Re: Stairs following csection?

  • After my csec with DS and I got home. I made sure to have the certain things I wanted that usually sit next to my bedside with me but come bed time I walked up the stairs. I took my time. Took one stair at a time and rested when I needed to. It took me some time to get up them but sleeping on the couch or in my chair wasn't a comfy option for me.

  • I was in the hospital for 6 days after i had K and there i just went up and down a flight or so to the cafeteria.

After we came home i had no choice but to use the stairs all the time as we lived in a 5th floor walkup! It was no big deal. Just take it slow but don't freak out over this.
  • Thanks so much all, that makes me feel better!  I will definitely take it easy, but it's good to know I should be able to get up and down if I need to.

You can go up just not too many times. I slept on the couch for a few days because I have no bathroom on my second floor and I knew I would need it a few times. If I had a bathroom I would have gone to my room.
  • wasn't an issue for me--just took it slow

  • I slept downstairs to avoid too many trips but if I wanted to shower I had no choice to go upstairs. Also my laundry room is upstairs and I don't let anyone touch my laundry ;)

  • I did not want to live on my couch, our bedroom and DS' bedroom were upstairs, so I just made sure I had what I needed and only went down if I needed to use the bathroom or get something from the fridge.  DH was great about making sure I was prepared each day.

  • I used the stairs the day I got home from the hospital - four days after delivery.  I felt like a whole new person after I got out of the shower (that was upstairs)! My mom who arrived the following day was freaking out that I was using the stairs.  She herself has three CS and was told when she had them in the 80s that she could not do stairs for two weeks. She had to close her eyes whenever I went up and down them. Just take it slow.

  • My doctor advised to try to limit stairs to once a day for the first 2 weeks, until my incision check.  I live in a townhouse so if I wanted to go in or out that is a flight, and the nursery is upstairs.  For the first few days I strickly avoided the stairs - I had no real reason to go outside in February with a newborn and DS wasn't sleeping in the nursery yet.
This time, with a newborn and a toddler I know I will need to use the stairs more, but I am just going to be careful to limit my trips as much as possible and really take my time when going up and down.
My incision healed beautifully last time with no complications and I think that was in part due to being certain to take care of myself and allow time to heal.

  • I am not having my c section until june 18.  My Dr told me no stairs for 1-2 weeks.  I have 3-4 steps I have to do to get into the house but i will not be able to do laundry or anything since it is downstairs.  I am not going to even try. You dont want those stitches to pop out or anything and have to be stitched up again.  If I were you i would sleep downstairs if you can.

I have not gone through it yet but that is what I was told per the Dr.

  • 2 weeks is a long time for your LO to turn around! I went up and downstairs maybe twice a day.
  • Just take it slow. I went up/down after getting home, but DH would always carry the baby, and I would go up at night, and come down in the morning when he would go to work. I had everything set up on our main floor that I would need (kitchen, bathroom, diapering supplies, couch to nap on, etc) and was still able to sleep in my bed at night. Just take it slow!
