Uh oh... 38+1w and getting sick

Thanks to DD, I am coming down with cold number six this pregnancy. I honestly usually get maybe one cold every two years, so this is quite a change! Anyway, my throat is raw to the point of where I don't want to swallow and nose is starting to run. I'm terrified I'm going to go into labor like this (or worse, after developing a cough). Any tips on your best remedies, and/or how to manage if I'm still sick in labor? In going to do warm saltwater, etc for starters. Seems like the last thing in the world I want to deal with but I might not have a choice.... Maybe my body will try to wait until I'm feeling better? My water broke with DD exactly this far along in my last pregnancy.

  • Have you tried honey and vinegar for your throat? Mix one teaspoon of each together and swallow. It  helps sooth the throat. My H and I do it when we have a sore throat and it helps.  Try to rest as much as possible. FX that your body decided to wait for labor. I know it would suck big time to deal with contractions when you are not feeling well. I hope you feel better soon!

  • I have heard that your body will wait until you are feeling better.  It makes sense, if animals can stop their own labors if they are in danger, why wouldn't our bodies be able to do the same?

I agree with the honey, though I haven't tried it with vinegar as pp suggested.  Also my SIL swears by using a saline nasal rinse.
  • Well, not so sure it's going to wait. Just had what I think was a bloody show (didn't have it with DD so unfamiliar). Have bee using a neti pot and lots of tea. Hanging in there. Can the show precede labor by a few days in stms?

Sorry to hear that. Are you taking your prenatals? I'm taking the Nature Made prenatal multi and I haven't had a cold since I got pregnant. They're really good. Hope you feel better before you go into labor.

By bloody show you mean mucus plug right?  I never noticed losing a mucus plug with my first.  I did lose it in pieces with DS and there was a little blood, but it was a week or so before I went into labor with him.

I wasn't sure if they were the same thing. I have been losing bits of thicker yellowish mucus for a few days, but this morning I woke up an all of the sudden had tons of clear mucus discharge with a bit of blood in it.

I would get on a z-pack and possibly a medrol dose pack asap... but that's just me.  I know a cold won't respond to antibiotics but I always end up with a sinus or respiratory infection and I'd want to get better as quickly as possible.

Sounds like your mucus plug, could mean today, could mean a week from now.  Things are happening, but it doesn't mean you are about to go into labor now.
  • It might be too late, but put hydrogen peroxide in your ears.  Sounds stupid, works wonders.  No one in my family has had a cold materialize in 2 years now.  If we do the H2O2 right away, we see great results quickly.
