  • I've never received a hostess gift and I've hosted quite a few showers, I also didn't give any for my wedding shower (hosted by bridesmaids and moms) is this a regional etiquette thing or have I just completely missed the boat on this one.
I was wondering the same things... I made some cards and was planning on writing them a nice thank you but now I am wondering if I should slip in a gift card or something... =/

  • Ditto what HappyFeet said.  I've never even thought of doing that, but I see it could be a nice gesture.. No clue what I would do for my MIL though.

  • Not sure if they like jewelry, but you could get your sisters the Alex and Ani aunt bracelet. You could also get them a nice picture frame with the promise of filling it with a photo of baby.

  • I got Starbucks gift cards and nice chocolate for my shower hostesses. Who doesn't like caffeine and chocolate :)
  • For my aunt I got her a beautiful potted flower, for my SIL's I made them picture frames and gave them a cute piece of jewerly, and for my work friend cup cake stuff bc she is obsessed with cupcakes.

  • My sisters are hosting my shower in NC, and I plan on taking them to get manis or pedis before. Two of my friends are hosting my shower here, and I will probably get them each a bottle of wine.

  • I'm a southern girl born and raised and you never have a shower without giving hostess gifts down here so it must be a regional thing. For my wedding showers and sex reveal party, I gave the hostesses things like a personalized party platter, personalized insulated wine totes with wine, necklaces, pedi gift certificate with a bottle of their favorite wine (not all at once, those are different gifts for different parties). I'm struggling with baby shower hostess gifts though. I'm out of ideas!

  • My hostess is a friend of mine who also co-hosted my wedding shower.  For the wedding shower I just sent really nice thank you cards, but I'm inspired to do something more for her for this.  I like the idea of treating her (& I while I'm at it) to a pedicure.  My go to simple gift for her is usually a nice bottle of red wine, but I think she deserves a bit more for everything she's done.

  • I didn't know this was a thing to do. My mom threw my bridal shower and is throwing my baby shower as that is the regional tradition here. I might make her a photo book with pictures of my grandma.

  • We give hostess gifts here sometimes- I'm in NC. I honestly didn't think about it for my bridal shower, but I'd like to do something for our baby shower. My aunts are giving us our shower, and I'll def be watching this thread for ideas!

  • I'm from maine and have never done this/ really heard of it either! My circle just does a nice card/ note to the hostess. Now I feel like I'm slacking!
  • I made them baskets w fancy shower stuff and my note said I hope your next shower is as lovely as mine was.
  • I've been a hostess for a bridal shower and a baby shower and never have received a gift. I also did not give a gift for the hostesses of mine. I've never heard of this.

Mine have always been more of a group effort with family and close friends all pitching in.

For my MIL and two SIL's I put together little gift bags that have a philosophy shower gel (smells so amazing), a cute set of travel cosmetic bags, and a l'occitane hand lotion. They all love cosmetics and body stuff so I thought this was fun.

For my BFF's who are throwing a shower that's for friends I found adorable gold necklaces for them that have the first initial of their first name. These were a bit more expensive but we don't often buy gifts for each other and I love them and want to get them something extra nice.

In my group of friends and family hostess gifts are the norm. They often range quite a bit from something very simple to more elaborate, but I know when I threw a friend a shower I really appreciated it.

  • I'm from Boston. I just threw a shower for my best friend in October and didn't receive a hostess gift. My sister is throwing my shower (with a little help). I don't think it's a must but it is a nice gesture. I may get her something small like a bracelet or something. Although, if I'm going to do so I should probably get it now. The way my memory has been lately I'll probably forget by then!

I had never heard of this. Since @HappyFeet34‌ is from New York and @Laur110‌ has a bruins avatar, I'm assuming she's from the northeast too. Hopefully we're all safe and it's not a thing up here...?

Yes, I am from CT. Also, just wanted to add that a heartfelt thank you either at the shower or via thank you note, is the best gift IMO.

  • I'm in MI and it's not the usual to give or get hostess gifts for showers in my circle either. I wrote nice thank you notes (it was my mom and MIL). It seems kind of rude of a hostess to expect something in return IMO, but a gift card or something small would be nice!

  • I did a cute potted plant for one of my showers last time and a nice serving bowl for my other shower. I think just a little token to show your appreciation is nice, doesn't have to be anything fancy.

  • I'm from FL and I don't think it's unheard of here, it just depends on your circle of friends/family. I have helped to throw two wedding showers and one baby shower and not gotten a hostess gift.

But for a wedding shower, I kind of feel like your bridesmaid's gift is also a thank you for the shower. I did give my MoH an extra gift for throwing the shower, though. And I gave my aunt, who threw a family shower, a gift.

For my baby shower, my mom is mostly hosting with the help of my aunt and her best friend. I will likely get something small for my aunt and mom's friend and then something a little nicer for my mom.

  • Southern gal here.  We definitely give hostess gifts!  It's usually something small -- nice candle, monogrammed note pad, small potted plant.  And maybe it's also because I'm southern, but I love gifts that have my initials or name on them!

Here are a few ideas from Etsy that won't break the bank:
Monogrammed tote bags (I love these for grocery shopping!)

Hope that helps!  BTW, I think I'm going to go with the serving trays!

I'm a southern gal and agree that you can never have too many monogrammed items! :)  and I have one of those platters - they are great!

  • Yep, southern born and if someone puts in the expense and time of throwing you a party for any reason, providing a hostess gift as a thank you is proper etiquette. I'm thinking of doing either a:

    1) Wine basket with crackers, chipotle-sauce (to pour over cheese), opener, and stopper.

    2) Bath and Body Works basket with lotions, candles, etc.

    3) Champagne and chocolate basket.

    4) A gift card to a local spa in a nice card.

    5) A chic-lit book and cozy blanket.

  • I'm from NJ, and I thought hostess gifts were the norm and gave them out to my bridal shower hostesses.  Then I hostessed 3 showers for local friends and got nothing, so maybe I'm the weird one.  IDK.

But for my bridal shower, I made little Bath & Body Works gift sets with loofahs and shower gel and included a card that said, "Thank you for the shower!  I hope your next shower is just as wonderful."

You should know how great things were before you. Even so, they're better still today.
