Do people think before they talk?

I went to get my hair cut yesterday, to a new person whom I have never visited before. We started chatting and it turned to the "do you have children", I simply responded, "No, not yet." Which was followed by "don't you want kids... what are you waiting for?" Now the woman was cutting my hair, so I couldn't necessarily respond how I wanted to which would have been...
 - I want them more than anything, I am not waiting... my body just has an alternate agenda for when that is going to happen, if it ever happens. It is completely rude for you to ask that question as you never know what another persons circumstances are... I am currently in the process of fertility treatments, which have left me with hot flashes, extreme mood swings, lost sleep, and drs. visits roughly 4 days a week. And I am not actually complaining about any of this because I will do whatever it takes to be a mom... I have faith in my Drs that despite all of the ups and downs it will be worth it in the end.-
Instead, after about 2 minutes of complete silence, I just said "It will happen when it is ment to be."
After leaving the salon I walked to my car and cried... why can't people think before they ask a question... especially something so personal, why ask a complete stranger about that? It turns out, I really liked my hair cut, but I don't think I will be returning to that stylist.

Oh that is awful, I'm so sorry. 

And no I am pretty sure people stopped learning how to think long ago.

Ugh, this is why I am so happy my hair stylist is a friend from school who also has PCOS.  People say those things because they can't think of anything else to make conversation with, and don't realize how hurtful it is to those with IF.

Oh no! I am so sorry that she said that you you, what an idiot. People are so bold and think it's their right to know your personal business. You are much nicer than I would have been, especially lately. Actions speak louder than words sometimes and she will peobably figure it out when you never go back to her. I'm sorry

((Hugs)) to answer your question, no, they don't think at all before they talk!! Strangely enough I had a very similar scenario with my hair stylist before I joined this board...I told the bitch off! She was mortified, and since I really liked my hairdo, I did return, and she's been perfectly appropriate ever since.

((Hugs)) It's truly amazing how many people make totally insensitive comments without a blink of an eye. Sorry you had to deal with that, especially when she was holding scissors to your hair.

I just want to say that I am so, so, so relieved that you are happy with your haircut - a small consolation but a really big deal when going to a new person!!

I bite my tongue around my friends because I don't want to alienate myself from them, but when it comes to complete strangers the gloves come off.  I would've simply said "Actually, I'm infertile."  That probably would've shut her up the rest of the hair cut.  I have absolutely NO patience for intrusive questions from complete strangers.

I'm sorry. I'm sure she is just clueless and was trying to make small talk. I honestly look back and realize that I may have said some insensitive things to people that I didn't know where having a hard time and I just had no idea. I am pretty sure most people have at some point. I just really hope that people would dismiss it knowing that I could never have known what they might be quietly struggling with.
