Trouble TTC

Question about medication cost

Hi,
I have not been on here for awhile. I had to change my name due to some issues with it before and then we were taking a break which ended up being longer because I tore my ACL during a skiing accident and had to have surgery. Anyway, we went to the doctor a few weeks ago and he wanted to put me on either Bravelle or Gonal F. They tried both with my insurance but apparently without warning, this year my prescription plan is no longer covering any fertility medications. Does anyone know what the cost of each for a cycle? I have been trying to price stuff online but some of it does not make much sense. My husband has suggested waiting until he can put me on his company's plan because they cover the medications but that will not be until next year.  It's just one more thing in the list of annoyances with everything lately. It doesn't help that everyone around us is pregnant.

ME: 37, unexplained, all tests normal, no blockage. I do have celiac disease though diag 2/09
DH: 37, mildly low motility
TTC since 1/2011 but not actively. Actively trying since 9/12.
11/13: IUI #1, 50mg Clomid + Ovidrel = BFN
12/13: IUI #2, 100mg Clomid + Ovidrel = BFN
1/14: IUI #3, 150mg Clomid + Ovidrel = BFN
Taking a break due to knee surgery

Re: Question about medication cost

  • Sorry forgot to put the names...

    Bravelle
    Gonal-F

  • Thanks! That is my concern that it will be expensive and not work anyway. The doctor said I did not respond as he would have liked to the Clomid. I would get 2 or 3 good sized follicles and had hoped one of these would work better.  It's just frustrating that they didn't bother to tell us before or we would have changed.
  • Thanks! I have to call the doctor back tomorrow and see what they say are our options.

It's all so very frustrating. Half of our friends plus my husband's little sister are all pregnant. All we get are the sorry looks lately or the insensitive comments. Everyone is completely clueless. The new one seems to be you should adopt and you know what after that you will get pregnant because you are not trying anymore. Yeah, it doesn't work like that.

I can't link it because I'm on mobile right now, but there is a post on the IF board that lists the prices of most meds at the most widely used pharmacies. ETA: It's titled "updated meds $".

Also, you can also apply to discount programs like EMD Sereno Compassionate Care. They offer discounts on certain meds if you fall below a certain income.

  • I'm completely OOP and I'm not eligible for any discount programs. I think I can get follistim through one of the discount program at the discounted price but it's cheaper to get my Gonal from freedom and I get rebates for each pen purchased, it's not a lot but adds up.

As far as dosage, your RE will prob start you out on 50-75 iu and go up depending on how well you are responding. This past cycle I was stimming for about 12 days at about 275iu per day. I'm also AMA and my RE wants 5-6, I got 5 this last time. The lower doses I didn't get but 1-2 mature so I have to be on the higher doses.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • You can check out discounted medications here -- https://freedomfertility.com/fertility-medications/medications-and-pricing.aspx

Also, look into applying for First Steps or Compassionate Care discount programs!  I was able to get 50% off injects at participating pharmacies.
